A Trojan horse is a virus that attaches itself to a harmless file and locks itself into your system. These files often come along with spam or scam emails, or by clicking on unknown links. A Trojan virus can completely ruin your day, but luckily they are quite easy to remove. Follow this guide to remove those unwanted Trojans from your system.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Using Antivirus

  1. Start a scan with your antivirus program. Depending on the number of files on your computer, this can take several hours. Depending on the virus, you will get different results:
    • Your scan may now detect a virus and remove it successfully. If this happens, run the scan again, but in Safe Mode. If nothing is detected, restart your computer and run the scan again after a normal start. If the virus is not detected, your computer is probably clean.
    • Your scan may detect a virus, but be unable to remove it. If this happens, search under the exact name of the virus with the major antivirus companies, such as Norton or Kaspersky. You should be able to find instructions there, specific to the virus you're dealing with.
    • Your scan may not detect everything. If this happens, install another antivirus program and try again. If the second antivirus program does not return any results, and you are sure that your computer is infected with a virus, back up your data and format your system again.
      • The major antivirus companies may be willing to help you identify and remove the virus right away, should their programs fail to detect it.
