The popular Keurig coffee machines brew cups of coffee by squeezing water through a plastic container with one serving of coffee. Each Keurig machine contains a small carbon filter, which purifies the water that ends up in your cup of coffee. This filter should be replaced approximately every two months. To replace the filter with a new one, first open the top of the machine and remove the old filter. Let the new filter soak before placing it in the machine. If you have a Keurig model 2.0 (or newer), make sure to set the electronic filter change reminder.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Removing the old filter

  1. Remove the top of the Keurig water tank. Most Keurig models have the water reservoir on the left side of the machine. Completely removing the top of the reservoir gives you access to the water filter.
    • You can replace the filter when there is water in the reservoir, or when the reservoir is empty.
  2. Pull out the filter unit. The handle of the top filter holder extends up into the reservoir. Grasp the handle firmly and pull the holder out of the reservoir.
    • The bottom of the filter holder is attached to the bottom of the water tank by means of plastic grooves. You may need to pry the filter holder or give it a strong tug to remove it.
    • If you have a classic Keurig series, the filter will be black and it will have a round timer on the end. If you have a K200 Plus, the filter is clear and shorter, while the K300 and higher models have long, thin and clear filters.
  3. Open the filter holder and discard the used filter. Use your thumb and index finger to push in the clips on the bottom of the filter unit. Pull down to release the bottom filter holder, then pull out the old filter.
    • The old filter can be disposed of with the residual waste.

Part 2 of 2: Installing the new filter

  1. Buy a pack of new Keurig filters. Neat water filters are not sold separately, so you have to buy a set. They are usually sold in packs of six or twelve. You can buy Keurig filters in the same stores that sell Keurig machines. Check stores and wholesalers that sell home goods, such as Blokker, Mediamarkt and larger supermarkets.
    • If you prefer to buy online, you can find Keurig filters at online wholesalers such as Amazon and Ebay. Also check the websites of stores that sell home goods.
    • Filter sets are relatively inexpensive. Depending on the number of individual filters per package, the price can be between five and then euros.
  2. Soak the filter in water for five to ten minutes. Before you install the new filter and make your first cup of coffee, the filter should soak and absorb water. Partially fill a cup or bowl with water and insert the filter. Make sure the filter is completely submerged during soaking.
    • The filter will float at first, but after 10 minutes it will have absorbed water and sunk to the bottom of the cup or bowl.
  3. Rinse the filter. For best results, rinse the filter with tap water after it has soaked. Open the tap slightly and rinse the filter for a full minute.
  4. Rinse the bottom filter holder. The bottom filter holder has a thin layer of mesh on the bottom. Rinse with tap water to remove any dirt and impurities that have built up during normal use.
    • Give the sides of the bottom filter holder a quick rinse as well.
  5. Place the filter back into the filter unit. Slide the new filter into the filter holder, with the rounded top facing up. Place the lower filter holder underneath. The mesh on the bottom of the bottom filter holder should cover the flat bottom of the fabric filter. Clip the two sides of the filter holder in place around the filter.
  6. Turn the replacement knob to two months. The replacement button is located on the top of the filter unit handle. It is about the size of your thumb and contains the numbers 1-12 (each representing the corresponding month). Turn the knob clockwise until the indicator points to two months after the current month.
    • So if it is now October (month 10), set the replace button to 12 (December).
    • The Keurig machine uses this setting to activate its electronic reminder after two months. However, you have to set the timer manually.
  7. Set the Keurig machine to remind you of the next filter change. Your Keurig has a setting that reminds you to replace the water filter every two months. If you have correctly set the replacement button for two months, you can activate the reminder in the middle of the electronic menu. Go to 'Settings' and select 'Water filter reminder'. Then select 'Activate'.
    • Depending on the specific model and generation of your Keurig machine, the menu may differ slightly.
    • Older models (prior to Keurig 2.0) may not have the electronic reminder feature.
  8. Place the filter unit in the Keurig reservoir. Once you have reassembled the filter unit, return the unit to the water tank. The external side of the lower filter holder will click into place when pushed firmly into the bottom of the reservoir.
    • If the filter doesn't click into place, make sure you have aligned the grooves on the bottom of the bottom filter holder with the ridges on the bottom of the water tank.

Tips

  • It is recommended to always replace the Keurig filter every two months, even if you only use spring or mineral water in the machine. The filter can also become clogged by impurities.
