This wikiHow teaches you how to convert an HTML file into a Word document. You will have to use Microsoft Word to perform this process. Fortunately, Word automatically converts an HTML document to the web page format when you open it in Word.

To step

Method 1 of 2: In Windows

  1. Convert your HTML file to plain text first. If you saved an HTML file as a rich text format (RTF) file - especially if you copied it from the Internet - it may have retained some of the formatting. If so, Word may not format the page for you when you open the HTML file. Here's how to make your HTML file use plain text formatting:
    • Open Notepad through notepad typing in the Start menu and then clicking Notepad.
    • Paste your copied HTML into Notepad by clicking Ctrl+V. to push.
    • click on File.
    • click on Save as...
    • Click the "Save as type" drop-down menu.
    • click on All files.
    • Type a file name followed by .html in the "File name" box.
    • click on Save.
  2. Open Microsoft Word. Click or double-click the Word app icon (it looks like a white "W" on a dark blue background). This will open the Microsoft Word home page.
  3. click on Open other documents. It's a link in the bottom left corner of the window.
  4. click on Leaves. This folder-shaped option is at the bottom of the page. This will open an Explorer window.
  5. Select your HTML document. Go to the location where you saved your HTML document and then click on the HTML document.
  6. click on To open. It's in the bottom right corner of the window. This will open the HTML document in its formatted form in Microsoft Word.
  7. Make the necessary changes. While Word should format your document exactly as it appears on the web page, you may need to clean up the formatting by ensuring that the headings are bold, the images are centered, etc.
  8. click on File. It's in the top left corner of the Word window.
  9. click on Save as. You'll find this option on the left side of the window.
  10. Double click on This PC. It's in the center of the page. This will bring up a popup window.
  11. Click the "Save as type" drop-down menu. This option is at the bottom of the pop-up window. A drop-down menu will open.
  12. click on Word document. It's at the top of the drop-down menu.
    • You can also enter a new name for your Word file in the "File name" text box if necessary. You can also choose a new save location (e.g. the Desktop) by clicking on a folder in the left sidebar.
  13. click on Save. This option is in the lower right corner of the window. This will save a Word copy of your HTML file.

Method 2 of 2: On a Mac

  1. Convert your HTML file to plain text. If you saved your HTML file as a rich text format (RTF) file - especially if you copied it from the Internet - it may have retained some of the formatting. If so, the Mac version of Microsoft Word will not convert the file to a document. You can remove the formatting by doing the following:
    • Open TextEdit through textedit typing in Spotlight and double-clicking TextEdit.
    • click on New document when prompted.
    • click on File.
    • click on Create plain text. (plain text)
    • Paste the text of your HTML file.
    • Press ⌘ Command+S..
    • Select Webpage from the "File Format" drop-down menu.
    • click on Save.
  2. Open Microsoft Word. Click or double-click the Word icon (which looks like a white "W" on a dark blue background).
  3. click on File. It's a menu item at the top left of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
  4. click on To open…. This is in the drop-down menu. A Finder window will open.
  5. Select your HTML document. Go to the location where your HTML document is saved and click it once.
  6. click on To open. It's a blue button in the bottom right corner of the window.
  7. Make the necessary changes. While Word should format your document exactly as it appears on the web page, you may need to clean up the formatting by making sure that the headings are bold, the images are centered, etc.
  8. click on File. It's in the top left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear.
  9. click on Save as…. This option is in the drop-down menu. This will open the "Save As" window.
  10. Click the "File Format" drop-down menu. It's at the bottom of the window. A drop-down menu will appear with different file formats.
  11. click on Word document. You can find this option at the top of the drop-down menu.
    • You can also rename the file by typing a new name in the "Name" text box, or select a new save location by clicking a folder on the left side of the window.
  12. click on Save. It's at the bottom of the window. Doing this will make a Word copy of your HTML document.

Tips

  • You may be able to find an HTML to Word converter online, although most online converters are more focused on converting Word documents into HTML code.

Warnings

  • You cannot paste copied HTML text into Word to convert it - the base format for the HTML file must be plain text, and pasting the HTML into Word will result in formatted text.
