We've all been there: you are cooking or baking and you forget the time, you forget to switch off the oven or you have set it to the wrong temperature. Then you open the door, your baking turns out to be charred and soon your entire house is permeated with a foul burning smell. Fortunately, you can get rid of the stench fairly easily with the help of a few simple tools that you most likely already have around the house. You can clean the rooms of the house where there is a burning smell, make different solutions that will absorb the burning smell, and make your own air fresheners.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Cleaning the kitchen

  1. Discard any burnt food. Let the burnt product cool down completely and throw it away completely. Put all burnt food in a plastic bag and dispose of it in an outdoor trash can. Do not leave the bag with the burnt product in the garbage bag or bin in the kitchen. The scent will then linger in the air for much longer.
  2. Open the windows. Open the windows to let the stench out and fresh air in. This is the fastest and easiest way to circulate the air in your home. Therefore, open windows and doors against each other as much as possible, especially those near the kitchen.
  3. Turn on fans if you have one. To circulate the air faster, take out any electric fans you have in the house and place them next to open windows and doors. Spin them on the highest possible setting to get the air moving. If you have a kitchen fan or extractor hood, turn it on too.
  4. Scrub as many surfaces as possible. Clean all surfaces in the rooms where the odor is noticeable. Mop the floor and clean other surfaces with bleach or disinfectant. If the smell is very strong, clean the walls as well.
  5. Wash or dispose of any items that stink. Wash all items of dust in the rooms where you can smell the scent. This also applies to tablecloths, curtains and covers. Use bleach for resistant fabrics. If the odor has gotten into cardboard boxes in the kitchen, put the contents of the boxes in plastic bags and replace the boxes.

Method 2 of 3: Absorb the odors

  1. Freshen up your home with lemon water. Bring a pan of water to the boil on the stove. Cut a lemon into several slices. Put the lemon slices in the boiling water and let them steep for 10 to 30 minutes for a fresh environment.
    • For a different scent, instead of lemon slices, sprinkle a handful of cloves in the water.
  2. Place bowls of onion water around the house. Cut an onion into slices. Put the onion slices in a bowl of water and place the bowl with onion water in the center of the kitchen. If your whole house stinks, put several bowls in different rooms. Leave the bowls on overnight and let the onion water absorb the scent.
  3. Soak bread in vinegar. Use bread and vinegar to absorb the scent. Fill a saucepan with water and add half a liter of vinegar. Bring the vinegar water to the boil and let it simmer for 15 minutes. Take some white bread and dip it in the vinegar water. Place the bread on a plate and let it absorb the smells.
    • You can also simply place small bowls of vinegar here and there to absorb the scent. Heat the vinegar if you want to make it even more effective.
  4. Use water with baking soda. Baking soda is a powerful fragrance freshener, especially when it comes to absorbing odors in the kitchen. To get rid of the burning smell, put about 100 grams of baking soda in several containers. Place the containers in different places in the kitchen and in other places in the house where you want to expel the burning smell.

Method 3 of 3: Hide the smell

  1. Create the aroma of fresh pastries. Preheat the oven to 90 degrees Celsius. Place aluminum foil on a baking tray. Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on the baking tray and add a tablespoon of butter. Turn off the oven and let the baking tray sit for two to four hours. This way your house will smell like you just baked a treat.
  2. Make a lemon water spray. Pour equal parts lemon juice and water into a spray bottle. Spray the liquid anywhere in the house where it is needed. The spray will absorb the scents and leave a natural lemon scent without chemicals.
  3. Make an air freshener with essential oils. Mix 180 ml of water and two tablespoons (30 ml) of vodka, alcohol or real vanilla extract with 15-20 drops of any combination of essential oils that you like to smell. Put the mixture in a spray bottle with a capacity of 250 ml. Shake well and spray wherever needed.
  4. Make an air freshener with perfume oil. Mix 2.5 tablespoons of brandy (French brandy works best, thanks to the drink's caramelly undertones), 20 drops of perfume oil of your choice, 5 drops of tea tree oil (for its antibacterial properties), and 180 ml of water. Put the mixture in a 200 ml spray bottle. Shake everything well and spray as needed.
  5. Get an aerosol can of air freshener. If you can handle it, spray some Glade, Febreze, or another air freshener around the house. Do spray in moderation, because the smell can quickly overpower. Spray air fresheners usually mask odors better than home remedies.
