Brita water jugs filter certain elements, such as chlorine and copper, that actually do not belong in your drinking water. If you're concerned about what's in your tap water and want to make sure you're drinking the healthiest water possible, filling and using a Brita water pitcher is probably a step in the right direction.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Using your Brita for the first time

  1. Remove the water jug from the packaging. After purchasing, take the jug out of the box it comes in. Then pull off and discard the plastic wrapped around the water jug. Remove all items from the water jug, such as the manual and / or the filter, and set them aside.
  2. Wash and dry the water jug. With the packaging aside, take the water jug apart and place the different parts in the sink. Use a mild dish soap, sponge and warm water to wash the parts. Then dry them with a clean dishcloth.
  3. Rinse the filter under cold water for 15 seconds. Remove the filter supplied with the water jug from the packaging. Then hold it under cold running water for at least 15 seconds. The filter is now ready for use.
  4. Place the filter in the water jug. Remove the lid from the water jug and hold the filter at the top. Align the groove in the filter with the notch in the opening at the bottom of the reservoir. Slide the filter down into the opening.
  5. Fill the reservoir with water. With the lid still off and the filter in place, fill the reservoir completely with tap water. The water slowly filters through and fills the bottom of the pitcher. At this point, the water is ready to be drunk.
    • To fill the jug completely, you will probably have to fill the reservoir several times.

Method 2 of 3: Fill your Brita daily

  1. Remove the lid and bring the water jug to the sink. Remove the water jug from the refrigerator when all the filtered water has been used up. Remove the lid and set it on the counter. Grab the water jug by the handle and hold it under the tap in the sink.
  2. Fill the reservoir with cold water. Fill the reservoir all the way to the top. Wait while the water slowly filters to the bottom of the jug. As soon as the reservoir is about half empty, refill it completely. This will fill the jug completely with filtered water.
  3. Slide the lid back on and put the water jug back in the refrigerator. When the water jug is completely full of water, put the lid on. Then put the jug back in the refrigerator so that it stays cool.
    • Drink all of the filtered water in your jug within one or two days to make sure you're drinking the water as fresh as possible.
  4. Every time you use the pitcher, add tap water to the reservoir to keep the pitcher full. Instead of waiting for the water jug to empty to refill it, refill it a little each time you use it. Each time you take the pitcher to pour a glass of filtered water, first fill the glass with tap water and pour it into the reservoir. This way your Brita water jug will always be full.
    • Be careful when pouring the glass with filtered water, as the water in the reservoir can run out if the lid is not securely attached.

Method 3 of 3: Replace the filter

  1. Remove the cover and pull out the old filter. When it comes time to replace the filter, you must first take out the old filter. Remove the lid from the jug and set it aside. Then reach into the reservoir, grab the filter by the top handle and pull it out. Discard the old filter.
  2. Rinse the new filter for 15 seconds. Remove the new filter from its packaging. Hold the new filter by the top handle under running water for at least 15 seconds.
  3. Install the new filter. With the filter still attached to the top handle, align the opening in the jug with the groove on the filter. Slide the filter down into the opening.
  4. Fill the reservoir with cold tap water. Once the new filter is firmly in place, fill the reservoir to the top with cold tap water. Your water jug is then ready for use again.
  5. Replace the standard filters or the Stream Brita filters every two months. If you are using the white-colored Standard Brita filter or the gray-colored Stream Brita filter, you must replace it after filtering 150 liters of water through the water jug. This will take about two months.
  6. Replace the Longlast Brita filters every six months. If you have the blue colored Longlast Brita filter, you can use the filter longer before it needs to be replaced. This type of filter can filter 450 liters of water, which means that it usually lasts about six months.
  7. Change the Brita Smart Pitcher's filter when an arrow is displayed. If you have a Smart Pitcher, the electronic indicator will let you know when it is time to replace the filter by displaying a flashing arrow at the top. After replacing the filter, reset the screen by holding the home button for five to ten seconds and releasing when you see four flashing bars.
    • If you have trouble holding down the home button, use a ballpoint pen with a cap.
    • One of these bars disappears every two weeks.
    • Once there is only one bar left on the screen, make sure you have a new filter on hand.
  8. Insert a new filter when the current one is filtering slowly. If you are unsure whether to replace the filter, pay attention to how long it takes to filter the water. If you find that the filtering process is taking longer than in the beginning, it is probably time to replace the filter.
