Multiplying decimal fractions may seem difficult, but it is actually very easy. It is the same as multiplying whole numbers, but you should not forget to move the decimal point to the result. Follow these simple steps to learn it.

To step

  1. Put the numbers on top of each other. Let's say you want to multiply 0.43 by 0.06. Put one number above the other.
  2. Multiply the numbers without looking at the decimal point. Multiply the numbers as you normally would. Here's how to multiply 0.43 by 0.06:
    • Start by multiplying the 6 in 0.06 by the 3 in 0.43. Then you get 18. Write 8 below the line and the 1 above 4.
    • Multiply 6 by the 4 of 0.43. Then you get 24. Add 24 to the 1 above 4. Then you get 25. The line should now read 258.
    • If you multiplied 0.43 by 0 you would get 0, so you should ignore 0.
    • The answer is 258 if you don't pay attention to the decimal places.
  3. Now count how many digits there are in total after the decimal point. There are two numbers to the right of the decimal point at 0.43 and there are two numbers to the right of the decimal point at 0.06. Together these are 4 decimal places.
  4. Move the decimal point at the result of 258 four places to the left.
  5. Add an extra 0 to the right of the comma. 258 now becomes 0.0258.
  6. Check the sum. If you want to make sure that 0.43 multiplied by 0.06 has the result 0.0258, do the following: Divide 0.0258 by 0.06 to make sure you get the result 0.43. Is it right? Then you are done!

Warnings

  • Don't put the decimal fractions on the same line. You only do that with addition and subtraction.
