When editing images in Illustrator it is necessary to know how to make the background transparent. If you are working with different layers, the background layer should not obstruct the view of the foreground layer. Here is how to do it step by step.

To step

  1. Start Illustrator. Open or create a path, then go to File > Save for Web
    • In the window that now appears, you have the option to save in different formats: GIF, JPEG, PNG-8, and PNG-24. You can choose anything except JPEG to create your file.
  2. Save as PNG file (Portable Network Graphics). You have two options: PNG-8 and PNG-24. The difference is that PNG-8 consists of a maximum of 256 colors. PNG-24 is a "lossless" format and can handle up to 16 million colors. Make sure the Transparency checkbox is checked (this is already checked by default).
    • Now you will see a chessboard pattern, as above.
  3. You can also save it as a GIF file. Also make sure that the Transparency checkbox is checked.
  4. Ready! The background of your PNG or GIF file is now transparent and can be placed on top of other objects.
