OptiFine is a mod to make Minecraft faster on older computers. OptiFine deactivates many of the effects and optimizes the game to improve its performance. OptiFine can be installed alongside Forge if you use a lot of mods. If you only want to use OptiFine, you can install it quickly with the installer.

Method 1 of 2: With Forge

1. Install Forge first. If you plan to install OptiFine alongside Minecraft Forge, you must first install Minecraft Forge (and any other mods for Minecraft) before installing OptiFine. OptiFine should always be the last mod you install.
   • You can download and install Forge from files.minecraftforge.net/.
2. Start the Minecraft Launcher. You must start the Minecraft Launcher and load Forge before you can install OptiFine.
3. Select "Forge" from the Profile menu and click "Play". This will start Minecraft.
4. Confirm that Forge is loaded and close Minecraft. You can tell Forge is loaded by looking in the bottom left corner of the Minecraft menu. It should read "Minecraft Forge XX.XX.XX". You can close Minecraft after Forge has fully loaded.
5. Open the Minecraft folder on your computer. The location in Windows is different from the one in OS X:
   • Windows - Press ⊞ Win+R. and typ % appdata%. This will open the Roaming folder. Open the folder ".minecraft", which you usually find there.
   • Mac - Hold ⌥ Option and click the "Go" menu. Select "Library" from the menu. This only appears when you press the key ⌥ Option pressed.
6. Download the OptiFine file that matches your Minecraft version. OptiFine has different versions available. If you have kept Minecraft up to date, you can simply download the version at the top of the list from optifine.net/downloadsotherwise you can download the most recent release of your Minecraft version.
   • You can download OptiFine as a single JAR file.
7. Copy the OptiFine JAR file to the "mods" folder. You can find it in your "Minecraft" folder that you opened a few steps earlier. Drag the OptiFine JAR file you downloaded into these "mods" folders.
8. Restart Minecraft and load the Forge profile. This will automatically load the OptiFine mod alongside the Forge installation. You should now see "OptiFine" in the lower left corner of the main Minecraft menu.
9. Adjust your OptiFine settings. You can find the new and expanded OptiFine settings under "Options"> "Video Settings".

Method 2 of 2: Without Forge

1. Download the most recent version of OptiFine for your version of Minecraft. Go to optifine.net/downloads for a list of available files. OptiFine is provided as a single JAR file.
   • If you have kept Minecraft up to date, you can simply download the version at the top of the list. If you are running an older version of Minecraft, you will first have to search the list until you find the correct Minecraft version, after which you can download the most recent version of it.
2. Double-click the downloaded JAR file. This will open the OptiFine installer.
   • If you can't open the JAR file, you may not have Java installed. You can download Java for free from java.com/download. Read Install-Java for more instructions.
   • If you have another program associated with JAR files, such as WinRAR, right-click on the file and select "Open with". Select "Java Platform SE binary" from the list of available programs. You must have Java installed for this option.
3. Click the "Install" button. This will automatically install the OptiFine files in the right place.
4. Open the Minecraft Launcher. To use OptiFine you have to select it from the Profile.
5. Select "OptiFine" from the Profile menu and click "Play". This will launch Minecraft with the OptiFine mod.
6. Change the settings of OptiFine. You can adjust the OptiFine settings in the game via Options> "Video Settings". There you will see the additional OptiFine settings that you can adjust for the best possible performance.
