This wikiHow teaches you how to find out if your computer has built-in Bluetooth capabilities. Most Windows computers and almost all Macs have built-in Bluetooth cards, but some desktop computers and older models don't.
To step
Method 1 of 3: In Windows
Open Start
Open Device Manager. Tap device management and then click Device management in the Start menu. The Device Manager window will now open.
- If you right-clicked on the Start icon, just click Device management in the pop-up menu that appears.
Look for the heading "Bluetooth". If you see a heading "Bluetooth" near the top part of the window (ie in the part with the letter "B"), your computer has built-in Bluetooth capabilities.
- If you don't see a "Bluetooth" heading, your computer has no built-in Bluetooth capabilities.
Method 2 of 3: On a Mac
Open the Apple menu
click on About this Mac. This option is located in the drop-down menu. A pop-up window will now appear.
click on System overview .... This option can be found at the bottom of the About This Mac window. When you do this, a new window will open.
- In older versions of macOS, click More info… in this window.
Expand the section under the "Hardware" heading. To do this, click on the triangle pointing to the right
Look for the subheading "Bluetooth". Look under the heading "Hardware" for the sub-heading "Bluetooth". This subheading should be at the top of the hardware options list.
- If you don't see a "Bluetooth" subheading here, then your Mac doesn't have built-in Bluetooth.
Confirm that your Mac has Bluetooth. When you see the sub-heading "Bluetooth", click it once to select it. After clicking the heading, if you see Bluetooth information on the right side of the screen, your Mac has built-in Bluetooth. If not, you cannot use Bluetooth on your Mac.
Method 3 of 3: In Linux
Open the Terminal. Click or double-click the Terminal app icon. This looks like a black square with a white "> _" in it.
- In most versions of Linux you can also just click Alt+Ctrl+T. to open the Terminal window.
Enter the command to search for Bluetooth. Type the following command and press ↵ Enter:
sudo lsusb | grep Bluetooth
Enter your password. When prompted, enter the password you use to log in to your computer. Then press ↵ Enter.
Check out the results. If you see the name and manufacturer of a Bluetooth device on the next line, then Bluetooth is installed on your computer.
- If an empty line appears, there is no Bluetooth installed on your computer.
- Note that some versions of Linux do not support built-in Bluetooth adapters.
Tips
- If your computer does not have a built-in adapter, you can insert a Bluetooth adapter with USB connection into your computer to use Bluetooth.
Warnings
- Linux doesn't always recognize Bluetooth adapters and dongles, especially if you have an older model of computer.
