Tired of juggling three or four different remotes to control your home theater? Use one universal remote control (RC) to control multiple devices at once. Universal remote controls are usually programmed in two different ways: either by entering a known code, or by searching for a code.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Remotes without a "Code search" button

Search for brand codes

  1. 1 Turn on the device you will be controlling. The search for brand codes is only supported by older TVs, DVD players, VCRs and satellite receivers. It is not supported by stereos, DVRs, or HDTVs (for these devices, use the other method described in this article).
    • The brand code can be found in the console documentation or on this website.
  2. 2 Press the button on the remote control corresponding to the switched on device. For example, if you are programming a remote control to control a TV, hold down the TV button. If there is no button corresponding to the switched on device on the remote control, press the "AUX" button.
    • After a few moments, the power button will light up. Continue to hold down the device button on the remote.
    • Keep the remote pointed at the device.
  3. 3 Hold down the power button while continuing to hold down the device button on the remote. The power button will turn off. Continue to hold down both keys for three seconds. The power button will light up again.
  4. 4 Release both buttons. The power button light should be on. If not, repeat the steps above.
  5. 5 Enter the brand code using the numeric keypad on the remote. While entering the code, keep the remote control pointed at the device.
    • If the code is entered correctly, the power button will flash once and remain lit.
    • If the code is entered incorrectly, the power button will blink four times and then turn off. In this case, repeat the described process. Make sure you enter the correct brand code and that your device supports it.
  6. 6 Press the power button. Each time you press the power button, the next code (from the list of brand codes) is sent to the device. The power button will blink. Continue pressing the power button until the device turns off. This means that you have found the correct code.
    • If you've entered all the brand codes on the list, the power button will blink four times and then turn off. In this case, use the other method described in this article.
  7. 7 Press and release the "Stop ■" button. This will save the code in the remote and assign it to the button corresponding to the switched on device (that is, the button you pressed earlier). If you do not press the "Stop ■" button, the code will not be saved and you will have to start the process over.
  8. 8 Test the operation of the remote control by turning on the corresponding device and operating it with the remote control. If you are unable to control most of the device's functions, use the other method described in this article.

Finding Codes Manually

  1. 1 Turn on the device you will be controlling (TV, DVD / Bluray player, stereo, etc.). The device must support the use of a remote control.
    • The number of functions controlled from the universal remote control depends on the device.
  2. 2 Press the button on the remote control corresponding to the switched on device.
  5. 5 Press the power button. Each time you press the power button, the next code (from the code list) is sent to the device. The power button will blink. Continue pressing the power button until the device turns off. This means that you have found the correct code.
    • Going through the codes from the entire list can take a long time. Depending on the remote control, you may have to enter several hundred codes.
    • If you have gone through all the codes from the list, the power button will blink four times and then go out. In this case, you can use the other method described in this article, but most likely, the remote will work with the device, since every possible code has been tried.
  6. 6 Press and release the "Stop ■" button. This will save the code in the remote and assign it to the button corresponding to the switched on device (that is, the button you pressed earlier). If you do not press the "Stop ■" button, the code will not be saved and you will have to start the process over.
  7. 7 Test the operation of the remote control by turning on the corresponding device and operating it with the remote control. If you are unable to control most of the device's functions, use the other method described in this article.

Method 2 of 2: Remotes with the "Code search" button

Direct code entry

  1. 1 Turn on the device you will be controlling. If you know the exact code to enter, then this method will not take much of your time. The codes can be found in the documentation for the remote control or on this website.
    • Some devices have multiple possible codes, so you may need to enter multiple codes to find a working code.
  2. 2 Press the "Code search" button on the remote control. After a few moments, the LED on the remote will light up. Release the "Code search" button.
  3. 3 Press the button on the remote control corresponding to the device. For example, if you are going to control a DVD player, press the DVD button. The LED on the remote control will blink once and remain on.
  4. 4 Enter the code using the number keys on the remote. After entering the code, the LED on the remote control will turn off.
  5. 5 Test the operation of the remote control by turning on the corresponding device and operating it with the remote control (try, for example, increasing the volume or switching channels). If you are unable to control most of the device's functions, use the other method described in this article. If you cannot control most of the device's functions, enter a different code.

Search for codes

  1. 1 Turn on the device you will be controlling. You will have to try all available codes, which may take longer (compared to entering the code directly).
  2. 2 Press the "Code search" button on the remote control. After a few moments, the LED on the remote will light up. Release the "Code search" button.
  3. 3 Press the button on the remote corresponding to the device. For example, if you are going to control a DVD player, press the DVD button. The LED on the remote control will blink once and remain on.
  4. 4 Press the power button. Each time you press the power button, the next code (from the code list) is sent to the device. In this case, the LED on the remote control will blink. Continue pressing the power button until the device turns off. This means that you have found the correct code.
    • Going through the codes from the entire list can take a long time. Depending on the remote control, you may have to enter several hundred codes.
    • If you have gone over all the codes from the list, the indicator will blink four times and then go out.In this case, you can use the other method described in this article, but most likely, the remote will work with the device, since every possible code has been tried.
  5. 5 Press and release the Enter button. This will save the code in the remote and assign it to the button corresponding to the switched on device (that is, the button you pressed earlier). If you do not press the "Enter" button, the code will not be saved and you will have to start the process over.
  6. 6 Test the operation of the remote control by turning on the corresponding device and operating it with the remote control (try, for example, increasing the volume or switching channels). If the device is controlled by a remote control, no additional programming is required.
