This article will show you how to access the HTML source of a website to try to find the credentials. While the HTML code of most websites can be viewed in almost any browser, chances are you won't find the administrator password or other credentials in the HTML code, and if you do, such a site is still under construction.

Steps

  1. 1 Remember, this method will not work for most websites. If the website code is highly secured, passwords and credentials are stored encrypted, meaning they cannot be found simply by viewing the HTML code.
  2. 2 Open the website. In a web browser like Chrome, Firefox or Safari, go to the website you want to hack.
  3. 3 Go to the login page. If the website has a separate login page, click Log In, Sign In, or Login.
    • If the site opened on the login page or the lines for entering credentials are on the main page of the site, skip this step.
  4. 4 Open the source code of the website. Your actions depend on the browser, but in most cases you can click Ctrl+U (Windows) or ⌘ Command+U (Mac). A new tab will open with the website's source code.
    • In Microsoft Edge, click the Items tab to view the HTML code.
  5. 5 Open the search bar. On the source tab, click Ctrl+F (Windows) or ⌘ Command+F (Mac) to display the search bar in the upper-right corner of the window.
  6. 6 Look for credentials. In the search bar, enter password (password), and then view the highlighted search results. If there is no password, enter one at a time pass, user (user), username (Username), login (entrance).
    • To find the website administrator's credentials, look for the username "admin" or "root".
  7. 7 Try entering an incorrect username and password. If you have looked through the HTML code and cannot find the credentials, do the following:
    • close the tab with the code;
    • enter random letters in the username and password strings;
    • click "Log in";
    • reopen the source page; to do this, click Ctrl+U or ⌘ Command+U.
  8. 8 Look for credentials. The updated source page will display information about a failed authorization attempt; now look for credentials again - to do this, enter the keywords that are indicated above in the search bar.
  9. 9 Enter your credentials to log into the site. If you find a username and password in the HTML code, try entering them on the site's authorization page. If that worked, you found the correct credentials.
    • Remember, finding the correct credentials in your site's HTML is nearly impossible.

  • Knowing the basics of HTML will give you a slight edge when viewing the source code of the website of your choice.

Warnings

  • The HTML of a website cannot be edited in your browser unless you have direct access to the server that stores the website's HTML file.
