1 Collect materials. If you are just learning to knit, use large knitting needles and thick thread. This will make learning easier. If you have small knitting needles and thin thread, make the loops loose so you have room to maneuver.
  • 2 Decide on your preferred style. You can use English or Continental. If you're a beginner, try both to see which one is more comfortable. This tutorial uses an English knitting style, but can be easily adapted to a continental style.
  • 3 Hold the knitting needle in your left hand and the other knitting needle in your right.
  • 4 Insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle so that the right needle is behind the left needle.
  • 5 Make sure the thread is at the back of the knitting needles.
  • 6 Holding the thread firmly with your right hand, wrap the thread counterclockwise around the end of the right needle so that it is between the two needles.
  • 7 Begin to gently pull the end of the right knitting needle with the thread wrapped around the end toward you through the first stitch.
  • 8 Gently pull the right knitting needle through the loop so that it is over the left knitting needle. Do not pull too hard to pull out the spoke.
  • 9 Carefully pull the new buttonhole over the right needle so that the old buttonhole on the left needle slips off. The thread should be taut after each new loop so that the loops are close to the knitting needles, but not too tight, otherwise the knitting needles cannot be inserted into them.
  • 10 Note that the first stitch is now on the right needle. Work all the loops on in the same way.
  • 11 When all stitches are on the right knitting needle, this means you have finished the first row of knitting.
  • 12 Swap the needles. The buttonhole needle should now be in your left hand. Now start knitting the second row in the same way as the first. Thus, you will get a garter stitch.
  • Tips

    • Knitting tip: "Back, around, above and below."
    • You will soon notice that all movements flow smoothly from one to another. This will allow you to pick up speed.
    • You can knit a scarf using garter stitch.

    Warnings

    • The number of stitches in each row should be the same. If you have a surplus of loops, most likely it happened at the beginning of the row. The first loop (like all loops in a row) should have a small collar just below it. If you are short on stitches, you may have dropped them from a different needle by mistake.

    What do you need

    • A pair of large knitting needles
    • Smooth, thick pure wool thread
