While logical reasoning might make you think your washing machine is clean inside, it probably isn't. Failure to clean your washing machine can lead to bad odors, bacteria and mold. Fortunately, there are completely natural methods for cleaning your top loader or front loader with vinegar. With the right methods, you can ensure that your machine is clean and your clothes clean effectively.

Method 1 of 2: Cleaning a top loading washing machine

1. Set the washing machine to the hottest temperature and the longest cycle. Turn on the washing machine and let it fill with hot water. Also use the highest load setting when doing this. EXPERT TIP

   Add approx. Add 950 ml of vinegar to the washing machine. Open the lid while the washing machine is running. Use a measuring cup to pour 950 ml of vinegar into the washing machine while it is filling.

2. Pour approx. 240 ml of baking soda in the water. For a deeper clean you can add baking soda to the water. Measure out 240 ml of baking soda and carefully pour it into the water in the machine.
3. Close the lid and let the washing machine run for about 5 minutes. Running your washing machine will ensure that the vinegar and baking soda wash away much of the dirt and grime from the inside of the washing machine.
4. Open the lid and pause the machine for one hour. Letting the hot water and vinegar sit in your washing machine for an hour will help loosen any dirt left in the machine.
5. Wipe the outside of the machine while it is paused. Use a clean cloth and citrus cleaner to clean the rest of your washing machine. Citrus agents are ideal for removing limescale and soap build-up. You can buy a store-bought citrus cleaner or make your own. Spray the dirty areas and use the cloth to wipe off the dirt.
   • Citrus cleansers use the natural properties of fruits such as lemon, orange and lime to remove dirt.
   • While cleaning, make sure to also clean the softener and bleach containers.
   • You can also use a toothbrush to get to hard-to-reach areas.
6. Complete the wash cycle. Close the lid and run the washing machine program. Wait until the cycle is complete and all water has been pumped out.
7. Wipe the inside of the washing machine and repeat. Finish cleaning the inside of the washing machine with a dry cloth. Once the machine is dry, you can repeat the steps to remove any remaining dirt in your washing machine.

Method 2 of 2: Cleaning a front loading washing machine

1. Fill the detergent compartment with white vinegar. Fill the detergent compartment with approx. 175 ml vinegar or until it is completely full. The detergent compartment is usually marked and can be found at the top of your front loader. When the container is full, close the door.
2. Start a normal wash cycle on the hot setting. If your loader does not have a hot setting, select a cycle for White laundry or for stain treatment. Let the cycle run completely.
3. Wipe the outside of your washing machine. While the normal cycle is running, mix 90 grams of baking soda with 1 liter of white vinegar in a bucket. Once the ingredients are mixed, use this solution to dampen a cloth and use the cloth to clean the outside of your washing machine.
4. Start an additional rinse cycle. Run a rinse cycle without adding extra detergent or vinegar. This should get rid of the vinegar smell and will help get rid of any residual dirt. When that's done, the washing machine should be ready to use.
