- Wear rubber gloves to keep the gum from sticking to your fingers. But keep in mind that your clothes will need to be put in the freezer as soon as possible, so don't waste a lot of time looking for gloves.
- The plastic bag can be of any size. The main thing is that it fits in the freezer.
- If you don't have a freezer nearby, but have a few ice cubes on hand, you can rub them on the gum until it hardens.
- You need to remove the gum right after you take your clothes out of the freezer because they can become soft and sticky again.
Method 2 of 4: Ironing
- 1 Place a piece of cardboard on the ironing board. You will need some cardboard to keep the gum from smearing on the ironing board. Lay the garment with the chewing gum side facing the middle of the piece of cardboard.
- You can also use a piece of brown paper.
- 2 Heat the iron to medium temperature without steam. Set it to medium heat, otherwise the gum will melt completely. Our goal is to heat it up so that it sticks off the fabric rather than spreading over it.
- 3 Run the iron over the stained part of the garment. Place the chewing gum cloth face down on the cardboard. It should sort of separate the iron from the elastic.
- 4 Continue ironing the garment until the elastic comes off. The elastic should stick to the piece of cardboard as a result. Continue ironing the stained area until the elastic is completely adhered to it.
Method 3 of 4: Using Hot Liquid
- 1 Use a hot liquid to remove the gum. There are three different methods you can use: cleaning with hot water, hot steam, or hot white vinegar.
- Hot water cleaning. Boil water in a large saucepan. The size of the pot will depend on the size of the stained clothing.
- Hot steam cleaning. Place the kettle of water on high heat and let it boil. Steam will start escaping from the kettle, which you can use to perfectly clean your clothes.
- Hot vinegar cleaning. Heat white vinegar. Then dip the edge of a towel or rag into it.
- 2 Let the liquid do its job. Regardless of which method you choose, the most important thing is to keep the liquid hot. Be aware that you may need to repeat the procedure several times.
- Hot water: Immerse the soiled piece of clothing in hot water. Keep your clothes underwater for a few minutes. During this time, the gum will come off the clothes.
- Hot steam: Hold a chewing gum cloth right in front of the spout of the kettle. The steam will heat the gum and soften it.
- Hot vinegar: Apply a rag soaked in hot vinegar to the stained area. The vinegar should soften the gum and make it easier to peel off the fibers of the fabric.
- 3 Remove the gum with a toothbrush or knife. After the gum has warmed up, you will need to remove it immediately. Take a toothbrush or dull knife and gently scrape the gum off your clothing. If the gum does not come off, heat it up again.
- 4 Machine wash clothes. After you've removed most of the gum, put your clothes in the washing machine to rinse out any remaining gum.
Method 4 of 4: Using peanut butter (paste)
- 1 Place a spoonful of peanut butter on top of the gum. The gum should be completely covered in oil. Apply additional oil around the edges of the stain. Peanut butter is used because it separates the gum well from the fibers of the clothing.
- 2 Leave the oil on the fabric for 60 seconds. We don't need any longer, otherwise the peanut butter will stain your clothes.
- 3 Then take a butter knife and scrape the gum off your clothes. If you don't have a knife on hand, you can use any other object with a thin, sharp edge, such as a putty knife, your own nails, or a metal nail file. Scrape off the gum along with the oil, just don't scratch too hard or damage your clothes.
- 4 Apply a little stain remover to the stained area of the fabric. Do this after scrubbing the gum and oil. While peanut butter is great for removing gum, it can stain clothes. Fortunately, a stain remover can help you here. Apply it to the stained area and then put the clothes in the washing machine.
Tips
- You can also try other products, but they are much more likely to damage your clothes. Try products like Goo Be Gone, glue remover spray, rubbing alcohol, WD-40, and hairspray.
