With Plasti Dip liquid rubber, you can easily and cheaply change the color of your car, and if applied correctly, it is very easy to peel off. Lift the edges of the rubber to peel it off in a large layer. If the layer is too thin to peel off, Plasti Dip will have to be washed with WD-40 or a liquid rubber remover. You can also use paint thinner to soften and clean liquid rubber. After you remove the Plasti Dip, wash and polish the car to restore it to its original appearance.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Peeling Liquid Rubber

  1. 1 Lift the liquid rubber up by the edge. First, select an area to work with, such as the hood. Starting at a corner, try to peel the rubber off with your fingers. Do not try to peel everything off at once, otherwise a lot of small strips of liquid rubber will remain on the car.
    • If applied correctly, the liquid rubber will be thick enough and easier to peel off. Thinner layers will peel off and will have to be washed with WD-40 or other means.
  2. 2 Peel off the rubber with your hands. Continue peeling the rubber along the entire edge without pulling it off completely. Once you're done with this edge, pull the rubber down along the surface of the car. It will come off in one large layer that you can throw away.
  3. 3 Remove remaining pieces of liquid rubber with a microfiber cloth. Take a microfiber cloth and wipe off any remaining pieces of rubber. Be sure to look into hidden places, such as the edges of the hood, doors, or the underside of a car. In these places, the liquid rubber will consist of thin strips that can be easily peeled off.
  4. 4 Rinse off pieces of liquid rubber that do not give in with isopropyl alcohol. You can buy it at a hardware store or pharmacy. Pour the rubbing alcohol into a spray bottle to make it easier to apply. Spray alcohol along the edge of the liquid rubber to get it underneath. Try peeling off the rubber or rubbing it off with a cloth.
    • If you need, for example, to remove rubber from the wheels, spray alcohol on the outer edge of the wheels.
    • You can also use a pressure washer for this, but be sure to set it to minimum power so as not to scratch the car.
  5. 5 Wash the car immediately with water and detergent. To avoid damaging the paint, rinse off the isopropyl alcohol and any remaining pieces of liquid rubber. Wash your car with a safe product available from an auto parts store, rinse it off with a hose, and then dry it with microfiber towels.

Method 2 of 3: Using the WD-40

  1. 1 Apply WD-40 to liquid rubber. This tool allows you to easily remove liquid rubber. You can buy it at almost any hardware store or auto parts store. If not sold in a spray bottle, pour the product into a spray bottle to make it easier for you to apply. Cover the liquid rubber with a copious amount of the product.
    • Instead of WD-40, you can use a store-bought adhesive remover or liquid rubber remover. You can find them at most hardware stores.
  2. 2 Take a microfiber cloth and rub the WD-40 into the liquid rubber. You can also use paper towels for this. Rub in a circular motion to penetrate the rubber better.
  3. 3 Wipe off the rubber after 5 minutes. Leave the WD-40 on for 5 minutes, then start wiping down the Plasti Dip with a microfiber cloth. The rubber should start to come off without any problem. Rub gently to avoid scratching the car.
  4. 4 Scrape off stubborn pieces of liquid rubber with a plastic blade. Place the blade over the remaining pieces of Plasti Dip. Apply light pressure to the blade to avoid accidentally scratching the surface under the rubber. Run the blade slowly over the rubber to remove it.
    • A plastic blade is less likely to scratch your car, so it's better to use one than a metal blade or paint scraper.
  5. 5 Wash the car with water and detergent. Wash your car thoroughly to remove the WD-40 and any remaining liquid rubber. If you notice tiny pieces of Plasti Dip on the body, wipe them off with a cloth dampened in warm water.
    • Make sure there are no traces of WD-40 left on the body so that it does not damage the car. Pay special attention to such delicate parts of the car as the brakes.

Method 3 of 3: Using paint thinner

  1. 1 Soak paper towels in solvent. Leave the car in a well-ventilated area, such as a driveway, and wear a pair of gloves to protect your hands. Pour some solvent into the container. Soak 2-3 paper towels in solvent.
  2. 2 Place paper towels on top of the liquid rubber. The trick is to keep the paper towels as flat as possible. The upper part of the car is easy to handle, but the lower one will have to sweat. Leave the towels for as long as possible, securing them to the frame with plastic staples.
  3. 3 Wait for Plasti Dip to absorb into the paper towel. Watch as the paper towels begin to change. Notice how, after a few minutes, stains of the same color as the liquid rubber begin to appear on the paper towels. When this happens, the liquid rubber will soften enough to be removed.
  4. 4 Place the towels over the other liquid rubber area. Remove the paper towels from the car carefully. To speed up this process, place the towels on other areas that are still covered in liquid rubber. If the towels won't stick, soak them again in the solvent.
  5. 5 Remove Plasti Dip with a drywall scraper. Return to the spot you previously soaked in the solvent. Keep the scraper flat on the surface of the car. Insert it under the rubber and try to remove it. Take a clean paper towel or trash bag and wipe off the sticky substance left on the scraper.
  6. 6 Take a paper towel, dampen it in solvent, and wipe off any remaining liquid rubber. Take another paper towel and soak it in the solvent. Use it to wipe down the first area where the paper towels were. This will remove small pieces of liquid rubber and soften the larger pieces.
  7. 7 Repeat the solvent treatment. Continue to soak paper towels in solvent, scrape off the rubber with a scraper, and towel dry. You may need to spray the same area several times before you can completely clear the liquid rubber from it. Yes, this job is not easy, but this is how you can safely remove Plasti Dip from delicate areas of a car like its body.
  8. 8 Wash the car with water and detergent. The solvent should only work on liquid rubber, but wash the car just in case. Use only a safe detergent and wash it off when you're done to restore the car to its original appearance.
