When your laminate surface is scratched, you can fill in the scratches with a special laminate paste or putty, or you can apply furniture wax to hide the scratches. Although scratches cannot be completely removed, you can use a variety of household products to keep your desk surfaces looking good.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Using furniture wax

1. 1 Clean the surface of your laminate countertop where the scratches have appeared.
   • Use warm water and dishwashing liquid, or spray undiluted vinegar on the damaged surface to remove any existing stains before removing the scratches. If the scratches are too deep and the vinegar hasn't removed the stains, apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol to the damaged area.
2. 2 Use a soft cloth to remove any remaining cleaning solution and wipe the area dry.
3. 3 Apply furniture wax to scratches using a clean, soft cloth.
   • Waxing your laminate countertop is the best way to hide minor scratches.
4. 4 Rub wax into scratches on the countertop.
   • Use a soft cloth to wax the rest of the countertop, including those that are not scratched. This must be done so that the appearance of the entire countertop is the same.
5. 5 Polish the entire countertop surface.
   • Use another clean, soft cloth to rub the wax, or use an electric polishing tool that has a lambswool applicator for optimal results.

Method 2 of 2: Using a filler or laminate paste

1. 1 Apply laminate putty or laminate repair paste to scratches on your countertop.
   • Laminate pastes and putties penetrate the deepest scratches and hide them completely. You can purchase special laminate pastes and putties for wood or plastic surfaces.
   • Find a paste or putty that matches the color of your countertop at any hardware store that specializes in renovation products. You can also contact your countertop manufacturer directly for advice on which product to use or to find out the exact color of your countertop.
   • Apply several coats of paste to each scratch according to the instructions on the package. You can also apply 1.58mm of paste for each coat.
2. 2 Use a trowel to spread the layers evenly over the worktop surface.
3. 3 Let the paste dry for at least 24 hours before using the countertop.

Tips

• In addition to removing scratches, laminate paste or putty is used to remove small chips or irregularities on the countertop.
• Use cutting boards to cut food instead of the surface of your countertop. Most of the scratches on the countertop are from sharp objects such as knives.
• Car wax can be used as an alternative to furniture wax, however, you may want to check with your countertop manufacturer before applying car wax to ensure the product is safe for the countertop.
• If your attempts to remove scratches have failed, you can apply a thin coat of matching paint to the surface of your countertop.
