This article will show you how to change public IP address and private IP address on a Windows computer. The public IP address is transmitted by the computer to other networks, and the private IP address is assigned to the computer on the local network. If you change any of these addresses, the connection problems can be resolved.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Public IP Address

1. 1 Disconnect your router and modem. Most ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses that change from time to time. If you disconnect the modem for a while, most likely, the computer will be assigned a new address.
   • Find out the current IP address first.
   • Just unplug your router and modem from the power source.
2. 2 Turn off the wireless network on your computer. This will prevent the computer from connecting to the router when you turn it on. For this:
   • Click the icon in the lower right corner of the screen.
   • Click on "Wireless Network" in the pop-up window.
3. 3 Wait five minutes. Some ISPs will assign a new IP address after five minutes; if that doesn't work, unplug your router overnight (eight hours).
4. 4 Turn on the router. If another device (such as a phone, game console, or other computer) is connected to the wireless network, the router and the second device will require the old IP address.
5. 5 Turn on the wireless network on your computer. If you do this after other devices have tried to connect to the network, the computer's public IP address will most likely change.
   • Check your current IP address again to make sure it has changed.
6. 6 Contact your internet service provider. On rare occasions, it assigns a static IP address. To change this address, you must contact your provider. Typically, a static address can only be changed once.
7. 7 Use a proxy server. In this case, the computer will be assigned the IP address of a different country. Generally, good proxies and VPNs come with a fee.

Method 2 of 2: Private IP

How to renew your private IP address

1. 1 Open the start menu . It is located in the lower right corner of the screen. If you need to change the IP address to fix a connection issue, update it instead of manually changing it.
2. 2 In the start menu search bar, type command line. This will start the search process for the Command Line utility.
3. 3 Right click on the icon command line. You will find it at the top of the Start menu.
4. 4 Click on Run as administrator. It's near the bottom of the drop-down menu.
   • If you are logged in as a guest, the specified option will not appear, meaning you will not be able to update the computer's IP address.
5. 5 Click on Yeswhen prompted. A command prompt window will open.
6. 6 Enter ipconfig / release and press ↵ Enter. The current IP address will be deleted.
7. 7 Enter ipconfig / renew and press ↵ Enter. The IP address will be updated. This method will most likely resolve some connection issues, but not necessarily change the computer's IP address.

How to change private IP address

1. 1 Open the Options menu. To do this, go to the "Start" menu and select "Options" .
2. 2 Click "Network and Internet" .

   • Subnet mask... Its meaning depends on the IP address, but usually the mask looks like this: 255.255.255.X.
   • Main gate... This is the IP address of your router.
   • Preferred DNS Server... Enter the address of your preferred DNS server (for example, 208.67.222.222 for OpenDNS server or 8.8.8.8 for Google server).
   • Alternative DNS server... Enter the secondary DNS server address (for example, 208.67.220.220 for OpenDNS server or 8.8.4.4 for Google server).
9. 9 Click on Save. Your changes will be saved and your computer will be assigned a new private IP address.

Tips

• Change your public IP address if, for example, your account has been banned from a gaming service (such as Steam). Change the private IP address to fix errors that occur while loading the site.
• If you use a proxy server, the actual IP address will not change, but the IP address will change, which will be available to other devices and users.
• You can also use a browser like Tor to hide your IP address, although these browsers are not considered very secure and are slower than regular browsers.

Warnings

• If you change the private IP address of a computer, other devices that are currently using the same IP address will be disconnected from the network.
