If your Kindle device is frozen or is malfunctioning, there are two ways to restart it - a soft restart will fix most problems, but a hard reset (factory reset) is needed to troubleshoot major problems. Any Kindle model can be rebooted in several ways to get the device working.

Part 1 of 3: Preparing to restart your Kindle

  1. 1 To get started, try simply restarting your Kindle. Sometimes the Kindle freezes in such a way that the screen or buttons do not respond to user taps. In this case, turn off the device, connect it to a power source (to charge it), and then turn it on. Try this method before moving on to the next steps to see if it can help you troubleshoot your problem.
  2. 2 Perform either a soft reboot or a hard reset (factory reset). A soft restart will not affect user data (such as saved passwords and workbooks); this restart is necessary if your Kindle is frozen or slow. With a full reset, all user data will be deleted, and the settings will be reset to the factory settings; use such a reset only in extreme cases, for example, with constant crashes or regular freezes.
    • If a soft restart does not work, perform a hard reset.
    • Amazon offers a service to help you find an acceptable solution to your problem.
    • If you drop your Kindle or spill water on it, it's best to take your device to a specialized workshop. If the service is still under warranty, the Amazon service center will replace the broken device free of charge; otherwise, a technician will repair your Kindle for a reasonable fee.
  3. 3 Charge your device. This must be done before proceeding with a soft reset or hard reset. Connect your device to a power source using the cable that came with your Kindle.Wait until the battery is fully charged (the battery charging icon is at the top of the home screen) and then disconnect your Kindle from the power source.
    • Remember that a full reset can only be performed if the device's battery is at least 40% charged.
  4. 4 Back up important files and saved passwords. Please be aware that a hard reset will erase all information stored in the device's memory. Content you purchased through Amazon is linked to your account so you can download it again (free), but eBooks and apps you download from other sources need to be backed up. Part 2 of 3: Soft restarting your Kindle

  1. 1 First generation Kindle soft reset. Turn off the device, open the back cover and remove the battery. Wait one minute, insert the battery and turn on the device.
    • Use a small pointed object (such as a pen) or fingernails to remove the battery from the device. Do not use scissors or a knife - these items can damage the battery.
    • Close the back cover securely. When closed tightly, you will hear a characteristic click.
  2. 2 A soft reset for the second and next generation Kindle. Hold down the power button for 20 seconds (or slide the power slider to the Off position for 20-30 seconds). This will reboot the device (not turn it off). When you release the power button, you will see the reboot screen (black blank screen).
  3. 3 Wait for the device to reboot. This will take 1-2 minutes. Take your time - let the reboot process complete. After rebooting, the device will turn on automatically; if this does not happen (within 10 minutes), turn on the device by pressing the power button.
    • There is a chance that the device will freeze on reboot. If the Kindle does not turn on automatically after restarting within 10 minutes, the device is frozen.
  4. 4 Charge your device. If the device freezes or fails to reboot after restarting, plug your Kindle into a power source and wait at least 30 minutes for the battery to fully charge. Do not disconnect the device from the power source prematurely, so as not to repeat the described steps from the beginning.
  5. 5 Hold down the power button. After charging the device's battery, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds. You will see a reboot screen. Wait 1–2 minutes for the reboot process to complete.
  6. 6 Check the functionality of the device. To do this, open the book and flip through it. Also check if the buttons on the bottom of the device are functional. Power off and on your device to make sure it works as expected. Continue testing your Kindle until you are sure it is fully functional. If the problem persists, perform a soft reset again or do a hard reset.

Part 3 of 3: Hard reset Kindle

  1. 1 Hard reset of the first generation Kindle. Turn off the device and use your fingernails or a small pointed object to open the back cover. Locate the small hole where the full reset button is located. Pick up a thin, sharp object (such as a needle or toothpick) and press and hold this button for 30 seconds or until the Kindle turns off. Wait for the device to reboot.
  2. 2 Hard reset of the second generation Kindle. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Immediately afterwards, press and hold the Home button; press this button when flashes appear on the screen. Wait for the device to reboot.
  3. 3 Hard reset Kindle Keyboard. Hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds. Then wait for the device to reboot; this will reset the Kindle to factory settings. If that doesn't work, follow this process again after charging your device.
  4. 4 Hard reset Kindle DX. Hold down the power button for at least 20 seconds. The device will turn off (the screen will go black) and then automatically reboot. If that doesn't work, follow the described process again after charging the device (the battery must be at least 40% charged).
  5. 5 Hard reset Kindle Touch. Press the Home button and then tap Menu> Settings> Menu> Factory Reset. Wait for the device to reboot.
  6. 6 Hard reset of the Kindle 5-Way Controller, including the fourth and fifth generation Kindle. Go to the Menu page, and then tap Menu> Settings> Menu> Factory Reset. Wait for the device to reboot.
  7. 7 Hard reset Kindle Paperwhite. From the home screen, tap Menu. In the pop-up window, click "Settings". Return to the Menu window and click Reset Device. In the warning window, click "Yes" to reset the device to factory settings (or click "No" if you don't want to).
  8. 8 Hard reset Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD. Expand the top menu and click "Details". Then tap Settings> Device. At the very bottom of the screen, click on "Reset to factory settings." Wait for the device to reboot. If that doesn't work, follow the process again after charging the device.

Tips

  • If the problem is not resolved after the first reboot, do the second, and so on. Sometimes it may take two or three reboots to restore the device to work.
  • Take breaks between reboots. Do not reboot your device several times in a row. Take breaks between reboots; during this time, you can recharge your Kindle.

Warnings

  • If you think your Kindle has a serious problem, take it to a workshop. Do not try to repair the device yourself!
  • Always back up important files such as e-books and passwords. Even in the event of a soft reboot, there is a chance that user data will be deleted.
