Anything can happen - they left the headlights on, forgot the key in the ignition, or just the battery has outlived its own. In any case, the car cannot be started, however, if there is a working car nearby or you have a manual transmission, your car can be brought back to life!

Steps

  1. 1 Make sure the problem is with the battery.
    • Check the headlights. If the light is dim, then the battery is most likely the culprit. If they shine brightly, then the battery is in order and lighting will not help.
    • Turn on the electronics. Even with a low battery, the dashboard will be illuminated and the radio should work. If there is no reaction from the dashboard, you may have a problem with the ignition switch.
    • Try to start the engine. If it starts up quickly, then the problem is not in the battery, if it turns slowly or does not start at all - most likely the battery "died".
  2. 2 Open the hoods and find the batteries. On most vehicles, batteries are prominently located under the hood, but they can also be found in the trunk and in the passenger compartment. Determine the polarity of the terminals.
    • A positive charge is indicated by a plus (+) and usually a red wire leads to it.
    • A negative charge is indicated by a minus (-) and usually a black wire leads to it.
  3. 3 Park the donor car next to yours. Position the vehicles so that there is the smallest distance between the batteries. Cars must not touch bodies. Turn off engines and all electronics in both machines.
  4. 4 Wear protective gloves and goggles. Check the condition of the batteries. If you find leaks, cracks or other damage - never light a cigarette! Better to call a tow truck or replace the battery.
    • It may be necessary to clean the contacts. Disconnect the wires and clean the contacts (first disconnect -, then +, connect first +, then -).
  5. 5 Unwind the cigarette lighter cables. They, like the wires on the battery, should be red and black. There are usually clamps at the ends.
  6. 6 Connect the cable as follows:
    • One red clip on the + terminal of the "dead" battery.
    • The second red clip is on the + terminal of the donor.
    • One black clip per - donor terminal.
    • The second black clip is on a grounded metal part of your vehicle. This refers to the bolt or frame under the hood (unpainted metal). The installed clamps must not touch each other, otherwise both cars could be set on fire.
    • Make sure the cables are loose and will not be pulled into the motor.
  7. 7 Start the donor car. Let it work for 5-10 minutes. For about a minute, you can slightly add gas.
  8. 8 Try to start your car. If starting fails, switch off the vehicles, disconnect the cables and check that the connection is good. After 5 minutes, try all over again. If it still doesn't work out, the battery needs to be replaced.
  9. 9 Let the machines run for 5 minutes.
  10. 10 Disconnect the cables in reverse order:
    • Disconnect the black clip from the frame of your machine.
    • Then a second black clip from the donor machine.
    • Then a red clip from the donor machine.
    • Finally, a red clip from your car.

Method 1 of 1: How to start without cable (manual transmission only)

  1. 1 Position the car on a hill or have a few people push the car.
  2. 2 Squeeze out the clutch.
  3. 3 Engage second gear.
  4. 4 Switch on the ignition (do not start the engine).
  5. 5 Take your foot off the brake (release the parking brake). Do not let go of the clutch. The car will start rolling.
  6. 6 When the ignition starts to crank, remove your foot from the clutch.

Tips

  • If you mix up the order of connecting the cables, then you can burn the electronics by welding the clamps in addition.
  • Buy a high-quality cable for lighting right away, it is not worth saving. The cable should be thick, and the longer it is, the thicker it should be.
  • Some cables come with connection instructions.
  • Batteries can be located in different locations. In general, it is better to thoroughly study your car first.
  • The pusher method works for reverse as well.
  • The pusher method is highly discouraged for vehicles with automatic transmissions.
  • There should be no open flames near the battery, as the gas emitted by the battery is extremely explosive.
  • A short circuit caused by lighting a cigarette cannot seriously harm a person by itself, however, it can cause ignition of gases from the battery.

Warnings

  • The cable clamps must not touch each other to avoid short circuits.
  • Do not mix up the cables when connecting!
  • Do not connect the batteries directly, on the patient car the minus must be connected to the car frame, not the battery terminal! Otherwise, the battery could explode.
  • use protective equipment and keep your face away from batteries.
