This dish is perfect for parties, movie screenings and just for a snack. Everyone loves rainbow popcorn, even those who have long since said goodbye to their childhood! It is fun to cook and undoubtedly serves as a wonderful decoration for the festive table.
Ingredients
- 180g popcorn kernels
- 2-3 tbsp vegetable oil (corn, sunflower, peanut or other, to your taste)
- 180g icing sugar
- 2 tbsp water
- For 1 / 2-1 tsp. four liquid food coloring of different colors (four is the recommended amount, which is most convenient to work with: you do not have to use too much dishes, and the popcorn will still look rainbow)
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Making Popcorn
1 Pour the oil into a large saucepan. Pour corn kernels into it. Cover with a lid.
2 Place the pot on the stove. Grill over high heat.
3 Wait for the popcorn to shoot. Shake the pot well from time to time to prevent the popcorn from burning. Shake more often until you hear a characteristic noise.
4 Remove from heat when you feel the dish is ready.
Part 2 of 4: Preparing Colored Sugar Water
1 Pour water into a small saucepan and add sugar. Bring the sugar mixture to a boil.
2 Stir the mixture frequently while boiling. Stir and cook until the sugar is completely dissolved.
3 Divide the sugar water into bowls, depending on the amount of color you choose. Add 1 to 2 drops of different food colors to each bowl.
Part 3 of 4: Coloring the Popcorn
1 Divide the finished popcorn into clean bowls for as many servings as you have bowls of colorings.
2 Pour the colored sugar water over a bowl of popcorn.
3 Repeat with the rest of the popcorn and colored sugar water.
4 Stir the popcorn and dye thoroughly. It will be much more fun for you if you find yourself an assistant.
5 Let each separate bowl of popcorn dry before mixing all the colors together.
Part 4 of 4: Serving Colored Popcorn to the Table
1 Use one large bowl to add all the colorful popcorn to. Mix well.
2 Serve to the table. You can either leave the popcorn in a large bowl for everyone to take from the same dish, or pour it into separate containers after mixing. Please note that for the second method you will need a lot more dishes (boxes)!
Tips
- As a result of the reaction of the dye with sugar water, you can get a completely unexpected color. Just go with the flow!
- Try to keep the amount of sugar water added to the popcorn to a minimum. If you overdo it, the popcorn will turn out soggy and inedible. Sprinkle lightly on the popcorn first to see how it reacts to the tinted water. There is a good chance that the popcorn will soften. In this case, place it in one layer on top of a baking sheet (lined with parchment paper) and bake in the oven at a very low temperature, letting the moisture evaporate for 10-15 minutes.
What do you need
- Large popcorn pot with lid (or dedicated popcorn maker)
- Small bowls for food coloring
- Large bowls for individual portions of popcorn
- Small saucepan
