The correct sequence of steps must be followed when replacing a tire on a motorcycle. The wrong sequence can damage not only the tire or motorcycle, but also put you at risk of an accident. Once you know the right technique, you will save time and money and also improve road safety.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Removing the tire

  1. 1 Prepare all the necessary tools for changing the tire (see list below). This is a list of essential tools that you can buy from a motorcycle parts store.
  2. 2 Deflate the tire using the nipple tool. This fixture either snaps into place or screws into the nipple, keeping it open. The air will be forced out of the tire with a great deal of force, so you need to firmly hold this device.
  3. 3 Draw an arrow on the side of the rim with a pencil so that you can see the direction of rotation of the wheel.
  4. 4 Remove the tire beads (inner edge of the tire) from the rim using a tire breaker (a metal tool that fits between the tire and the rim). You will hear a popping sound when the tire comes off the rim. Continue to remove the tire flanges from the rim on both sides.
  5. 5 Apply silicone grease to the tire beads. This will allow you to easily remove the tire from the rim by inserting a tire bar under the flange and pulling the tire off the rim. Remove both beads of the tire from the rim until the tire slips off the rim.

Method 2 of 2: Installing a tire

  1. 1 Lubricate the inner walls of the tire completely.
  2. 2 Position the new tire so that the direction of rotation matches the direction of the arrow you drew on the rim. There is a point on the tire that must be located above the nipple.
  3. 3 Using a pry bar, slide the tire onto the rim. This time, place the tire between the mount and the rim so that you can push the tire onto the rim with the mount.
  4. 4 Inflate the tire slightly with a compressor, but not completely.
  5. 5 Shrink the flanges onto the rim using the Breezer Tire Shovel. You can use it to pull the bead over the rim and then twist the tire to seat all the edges.
  6. 6 Inflate the tire to the recommended pressure.

Tips

  • Use multiple pry bars to remove the tires. This will allow you to remove the tire with less effort, so the stress is minimal.
  • The Breezer tool can become stuck if one side of the tire becomes too tight. Swap sides to make the job easier.
  • Motorcycle shops can be great sources of information on how to do the simplest motorcycle repairs.
