A motorcycle fork connects the main frame to the front wheel and axle. It allows drivers to change the direction of travel, as well as aids in braking and suspension. The plug itself consists of two pipes. Each requires an oil seal to keep the oil inside. Yoke seals should be replaced as soon as you notice a leak.If left inoperative, oil can spill onto the brake pads and damage your motorcycle, or the fork may be left without oil at all. Follow these steps to change the oil seals on your plug.

Steps

  1. 1 Prepare your motorcycle for service.
    • Loosen the 2 bolts that secure the forks to the frame and caps on each pipe. Then loosen the brake pad bolts and the entire front axle of the bike.
    • Put it in gear and support the rear wheel.
    • Raise the front wheel as much as necessary.
    • Remove the brake pads, fender, front wheel and all hanging cables.
  2. 2 Disassemble the plug.
    • Unscrew the screws completely and pull the fork downwards while twisting it.
    • Carefully remove the plug cover. Be careful because these are springs. Do not stand in the way of the cover when you remove it.
    • Take out the spring and let the oil drain into the bucket
    • Unclench the stem shutter by inserting the tool into the cavity to reach it.
    • Remember how the fork springs, washers and spacers were assembled, so that later it is easier to set everything back.
  3. 3 Remove the old oil seal.
    • Remove the dust seal from the fork tube.
    • Find the oil seal. It is put into place using a clip and a groove.
    • Pull it out gently.
    • Rinse where you are working in the fork to remove debris.
    • Take the pipe in one hand and the rack in the other. Use muscle strength to pull both of them separately. You will see the oil seal coming out of the hole.
  4. 4 Prepare a plug for a new oil seal.
    • Remove any rust and repair debris that caused the oil seal to leak.
    • Dampen a rag with oil and treat the place where the old oil seal was.
  5. 5 Install a new oil seal.
    • Lubricate the inside with oil.
    • Place the oil seal over the post and insert it.
    • Adjust it with the gasket. It will slide the oil seal into place gently and securely.
  6. 6 Put the plug back.
    • Place the clamp and dust seal on the fork. Place the dampened rod inward.
    • Fill the fork with new oil, measuring the height if necessary.
    • Place the spring and bolts back on the fork cover. Squeeze them.
  7. 7 Repeat these steps with the other fork tube.
  8. 8 Assemble the front of your motorcycle.

Tips

  • Instead of using physical force to separate the inner tube from the fork to remove the gland, you can completely fill the pipe with oil, thus creating pressure, and the gland will pop out.
  • Change both seals at the same time, whether only one is damaged or not. So they will be the same in terms of time of use.
  • Using a lift is the safest way to lift your motorcycle for maintenance.
  • The pipe may need to be replaced if you are unable to repair the damage caused by the old packing.
