If you are a resident of Massachusetts, then Massachusetts law requires you to have a firearms license in order to be able to own and carry a firearm. The application process is the same, although the type of license may differ depending on whether you will be keeping a gun at home or carrying it with you. Before obtaining this license, you must complete a Massachusetts approved firearms safety course. Next, you need to fill out a Weapon Owner Identification (FID) or Weapon Carrying License (LTC) card and hand it over to the police station.

Steps

1. 1 Sign up and take a course on safe firearm handling. The purpose of these courses is to familiarize yourself with Massachusetts small arms legislation and learn how to handle them safely.
   • Go to the official state Massachusetts website, which is linked in the sources for this article, and go to the Firearms Registration and Laws tab located at the top of the page.
   • On this page, click Approved Basic Firearms Safety Courses. Find a complete list of state-approved courses here.
   • If you do not have internet access, call the Massachusetts Defense and Security Executive Committee at 617-727-7775. Here you can get competent help regarding enrollment in these courses.
   • Upon completion of the course on safe handling of firearms, a certificate is issued confirming knowledge of safety techniques for handling weapons, which is required to apply for a license to own a weapon.
2. 2 Take the license application form to fill out. You can download it from the Internet or call the Massachusetts Defense and Security Executive Committee.
   • Follow the link in the sources, ending in PDF. From here you can open and download the application form.
   • If you do not have internet access, call the Massachusetts Executive Committee for Defense and Security at 617-727-7775 for the location of the nearest police station where you can pick up a paper form.
3. 3 Complete a Firearm Ownership Application.
   • Indicate that you are completing an application for the first time by checking the box next to New Applicant at the top of the form.
   • Indicate what type of license you are applying for. For example, if you just want to buy a weapon, check the box next to the Firearms Identification Card, not the box for applying for a weapon.
   • Provide all required personal information. You will need to fill in the fields with your full name, address, date and place of birth, name of parents, physical characteristics, place of work and employer information, as well as social security number or driver's license.
   • Fill out the questionnaire according to your legal status. You will need to provide information about citizenship, previous convictions or administrative prosecutions, mental disorders, drug or alcohol addiction. You will also have to tell if you were involved in domestic violence, and if a warrant for your arrest was issued anywhere.
   • If you answer "Yes" anywhere, you will have to provide more detailed information on this item.
   • Provide the name and contact information of 2 personal guarantors and explain the reasons why you want to obtain a gun license.
   • At the very bottom of the form, in the appropriate fields, put the date and your signature.
4. 4 Collect the remaining things you need to get a license.
   • Make a copy of the certificate from the security courses and bring $ 100 (€ 72) as your registration fee.
5. 5 Take the application and everything you need to the police station.
   • If you need help finding the nearest police station, call the Massachusetts Police Department at 508-820-2300 to find a station that will accept your application.
   • After you contact the police with a copy of your weapons safety course certificate and a $ 100 (€ 72) registration fee, you will be fingerprinted and verified based on the information provided on your application. The police will then inform you of how and when to obtain a firearms license.
