1 Spray the bamboo every two days. Take a spray bottle and fill with distilled or rainwater. Spray the bamboo with a bottle every two days. Regular spraying will help to avoid drying out the soil or, conversely, excessive moisture.
  • Distilled water and rainwater are best for watering and spraying bamboo - this plant is highly sensitive to salts and chemicals found in tap water.
  • 2 Check soil moisture levels. Every 3-4 days, check the moisture content of the soil with your finger: for this, stick your finger into the soil to the depth of the first phalanx. Rotate your finger back and forth to check if the soil feels wet or dry. If the soil is dry, water it or moisten it with a spray bottle.
  • 3 Water the bamboo once a week. Pour a small amount of water into the plant pot once every 7-10 days. Wait a minute for the water to be completely absorbed into the soil and check the moisture again with your finger. Add water to the pot little by little until the soil is moist enough.
    • Bamboo is sensitive to water levels, and waterlogging is also undesirable for this plant. If you have poured too much water into the pot and it is above the soil surface, remove the excess water.

Young bamboo plants should be watered more frequently than adults. In summer they should be watered twice a week, and even more often in hot weather.

  • 4 Make sure the potting medium is sufficiently drained. If something is preventing the free passage of water through the substrate, remove the obstacle. Make sure the mulch, pebbles, and other materials you put on top of the soil are loose enough to allow water to pass through.
    • If you are growing bamboo outdoors, check that the drainage material covers the surface of the soil tightly. Add more drainage material as needed to eliminate holes and undercoated areas.
    • Small pebbles, pebbles, and similar materials will help provide drainage and keep the bamboo stems upright.
  • 5 Vary the amount of water for irrigation depending on your location and time of year. If you live in hot climates, water the bamboo 3-5 times a week. The same intensity of watering is recommended on hot summer days. In cooler climates and in winter, watering bamboo is sufficient once every 7–10 days. In doing so, do not forget to regularly check the soil moisture with your finger and, if necessary, adjust the watering regime.
  • 6 Maintain soil moisture with mulch. Spread the mulch over the soil so that the layer is 5-7 centimeters thick. A layer of mulch will help maintain a constant level of soil moisture throughout the year and provide the necessary drainage properties of the substrate.
  • Part 2 of 2: Grow bamboo in water

    1. 1 Make sure that the roots of the bamboo are completely submerged in the water. Check the plant every day. Gravel, pebbles, or decorative glass beads can be used as root substrates; the main thing is to make sure that the root system and the lower part of the stem are always submerged in water.
    2. 2 Add water to maintain a constant water level in the vessel. If you see that part of the root system is in the air, add water to the container with the plant until it covers the roots completely. Add water every 7-10 days to help ensure a stable water level.
      • If you live in a hot climate or hot summer weather, you need to add water to the vessel more often.
      • You can use tap water, distilled water, or rainwater. If you want to water bamboo with tap water, pour it into the container in advance and leave it overnight - during this time, chlorine compounds, which are potentially dangerous for bamboo, will evaporate from the water.
    3. 3 Completely change the water in the bamboo jar once every two weeks. Once every two weeks, pour out all the water from the jar and remove the material you are using as substrate.Rinse vessel and substrate thoroughly with clean filtered or bottled water. Then return the plant and substrate to the vessel and fill it with clean rain, filtered, or distilled water.
