The zoom feature in Internet Explorer is a relatively new introduction to the web browser. In Internet Explorer 5, you can scale elementary text, but not the entire page. Internet Explorer 6 does not have built-in page zooming, although plugins can be downloaded to enlarge the image. In Internet Explorer 7 and 8, the zoom feature is much more robust. Now you can enlarge the text and the entire page in a few simple steps.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Scaling Text in Internet Explorer

1. 1 Open Internet Explorer 7 or 8.
2. 2 Click on the Page button in the upper right menu.
3. 3 Move the mouse cursor to the Text Size menu item. Select one of the following text sizes: Largest, Large, Medium, Small, and Smallest.

Method 2 of 3: Scaling a page in Internet Explorer

1. 1 Open Internet Explorer 7 or 8.
2. 2 Click on the Page button in the upper right menu.
3. 3 Move the mouse cursor over the Zoom menu item to view its options.
4. 4 Select Reduce or Enlarge if you want to make the page slightly larger or smaller.
5. 5 Choose from the following default zoom levels to zoom in for more accurate measurements: 400%, 200%, 150%, 125%, 100%, 75% and 50%.
6. 6 Set a custom zoom level by clicking on Custom and entering the desired zoom percentage.

Method 3 of 3: Using the Internet Explorer Preference in Internet Options

1. 1 Open Internet Explorer 7 or 8.
2. 2 Click on Tools in the top right menu.
3. 3 Select Internet Options at the bottom of the pop-up menu.
4. 4 Click on the Advanced tab and look under the Accessibility section. There are three options in this section: Restore text size to medium for new windows and tabs, restore text to medium size when scaling, and restore zoom level for new windows and tabs. Check or uncheck the box for the option you want.

Tips

• If your mouse has a wheel, you can hold down the CTRL key and scroll the wheel up to zoom in and down to zoom out.
• You can press CTRL + to zoom in or CTRL - to zoom out.
• Pressing CTRL 0 resets the zoom level to 100%.
• In Internet Explorer 8, some changes have been made to the zoom functionality. In Internet Explorer 7, scaling allows text to overflow on the screen. To view all the information on a web page, you need to manipulate the horizontal toolbar. Internet Explorer 8 automatically transitions to a new line when text is displayed and does not need to manipulate the horizontal toolbar for easy scaling. Internet Explorer also scales elements on a web page, rather than just enlarging them. Therefore, the scaling feature in Internet Explorer 8 is now called Responsive Scaling.

Warnings

• A common problem for Internet Explorer 7 and 8 users is that new web pages open at strange zoom levels, such as 200%. To fix this problem, go back to step 3. Make sure the Reset zoom level for new windows and tabs box is checked. This will force all new web pages to open at the standard zoom level of 100%.
