Perhaps you, like many others, have already discovered, disappointedly, that Age of Empires II HD lacks the ability to change the game resolution. If you have a small monitor, you can probably enjoy everyone's favorite HD version of the game. However, when you consider the fact that most gamers today have large monitors, the lack of resolution settings remains a real problem. Fortunately, there are some simple tricks to help you solve this problem.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Change the Windows Desktop Resolution

1. 1 Open Control Panel. The resolution of the game is directly related to the resolution of the Windows desktop. In other words, in order to change the resolution in the game, you need to change the Windows resolution. First of all, go to the Computer Control Panel.
2. 2 Open the Screen Resolution window. Click on "Adjust Screen Resolution" in the "Appearance and Personalization" section. Select the desired resolution from the Resolution drop-down menu. This is the resolution that the AoE2HD game and the Windows desktop will accept. The recommended resolution depends on the screen size of the monitor. Here are some popular screen sizes with recommended resolutions for them:
   • 14-inch CRT monitor (aspect ratio 4: 3): 1024x768;
   • 14 / 15.6 "laptop / 18.5" monitor (aspect ratio 16: 9): 1366x768;
   • 19-inch monitor (aspect ratio 5: 4): 1280x1024;
   • 21.5 / 23-inch monitor / 1080p TV (16: 9 aspect ratio): 1920x1080.
3. 3 Save your changes. After choosing your preferred screen resolution, click on the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window to change the resolution.
4. 4 Start the game by double clicking on the game icon on the desktop. The game will start at the specified resolution.
   • Resolution settings in Control Panel can be changed even while playing. Just press the Windows key on your keyboard to minimize the game and open the Start menu. Open the Control Panel and change the resolution in the Screen Resolution window, then return to the game by clicking the game icon in the taskbar.

Method 2 of 3: Adjust Resolution on Mac

1. 1 Launch AoE2HD by clicking on the game icon in the Dock (application bar on the Mac desktop) or Launchpad.
2. 2 Open the Apple menu using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Fn+F2. This will minimize the game and open the Apple menu.
3. 3 Open System Preferences. Find System Preferences from the Apple menu and select it to open it.
4. 4 Open your monitor settings. On the "System Preferences" page, click on "Monitors". In the "Monitors" window go to the "Monitor" tab. This will open a list of available resolution options.
5. 5 Select the desired resolution. The screen resolution will change. If you are unsure of the best resolution to use, use the available resolutions until you find a suitable one.
   • To return to the game and see how the new resolution affected it, use the keyboard shortcut ⌘ Command+Tab ↹to highlight the game icon, and then release the keys. To return to the monitor settings window, use the same keyboard shortcut until the Monitors icon is highlighted.
   • Continue until you find the most suitable resolution.

Method 3 of 3: Playing in Windowed Mode

1. 1 Start the game. The resolution of AoE2HD can be changed by running it in windowed mode and then resizing the window with the mouse. Start the game (follow this path: Start button All programs Games Age of Empires II HD or double-click on the game icon on the desktop).
2. 2 Open Game Settings. Press hotkey F10to display the game menu and click on "Options".
3. 3 Disable full screen mode. Disable the Full Screen setting on the Options page. This will put the game in windowed mode.
4. 4 Change the resolution manually with the mouse. Drag the edges of the game window with the mouse until it looks like you want.
