As a rule, perfumes do not indicate expiration dates, but they are still not intended for long-term use. To increase the shelf life of perfumes, they need to be properly stored. Choose a place away from sunlight and with a stable temperature. Store perfumes in the correct packaging and protect them from damage. Do not store fragile bottles on high shelves and close them with a cork after each use to prevent the fragrance from spoiling.

Part 1 of 3: Choose the right place to store your perfume

1. 1 Choose a location away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can damage the perfume bottle. Perfumes tend to last longer in dark places. To extend the shelf life of your perfume, keep it on a shelf or in a cabinet drawer.
   • Perfumes in colored rather than transparent bottles are less susceptible to UV damage. If you do not want perfumes (especially expensive ones) to lose their scent, do not leave them in the sun.
2. 2 Find a place with a stable temperature. Ultra-high and ultra-low temperatures can affect the quality of the perfume. Perfume must be stored in a room that is not subject to sudden changes in temperature.
   • Perfume should never be stored in the kitchen or bathroom. It can get very warm in the kitchen while cooking, and in the bathroom, the temperature rises when showering or bathing.
   • A closet in the living room or hallway is better for storing perfume.
3. 3 Do not store perfume in humid places. Moisture can greatly affect the quality of a perfume. This is why keeping perfume bottles in the bathroom like steam is a bad idea. To keep your perfume usable longer, choose an area in your home that is not exposed to excessive moisture.
   • If you have a dehumidifier somewhere in your house (for example, in your bedroom), then this can be a good place to store perfume.
4. 4 Put the perfume in the refrigerator if it's not too cold. Some people successfully store perfume in the refrigerator. While it may seem odd to have perfume bottles next to food, the temperature inside the refrigerator tends to be stable and not too cold. If there is free space in the refrigerator, try putting the perfume there.
   • However, in very cold refrigerators, the perfume can deteriorate. Do not store perfume in the refrigerator if you often notice that drinks, fruits and vegetables freeze a little.
5. 5 Try storing your perfume in a closet. Typically, a cabinet is an ideal place to store perfume because it is away from sunlight and is usually kept at a constant temperature. Try freeing up some closet space for your best perfume.
   • However, you should consider the location of the cabinet. For example, a closet in a bathroom or kitchen is not suitable for storing perfume.
   • A wardrobe next to the front door or by the window is also not the best option. Drafts can often occur in these places, and changes in temperature can affect the quality of the perfume.

Part 2 of 3: Choose your storage capacity

1. 1 Store the perfume in its original bottle. If you still have the bottle in which the perfume was sold, then store it in it. Do not transfer perfume to another bottle, as this will expose it to the air. Because of this, the perfume may lose some of its scent.
2. 2 Store perfume in boxes. Place the perfume in the box before storing it. The box will even better protect the perfume from heat and sunlight. Put all the perfume bottles in the box before putting the perfume in the closet or on the shelf.
   • Make sure all bottle caps are tightly closed so that perfume does not accidentally spill in the box.
   • Decorative boxes are great for storing perfume.
3. 3 Buy travel containers. If you are going somewhere and want to take perfume with you, buy a special set of travel containers to keep the perfume safe and sound.Before you travel, buy travel containers that are suitable for your favorite perfume, especially if you are traveling by plane. If you can't find a set of travel containers, buy an empty bottle and fill it with perfume.
   • Travel containers are a great choice as there is always the risk of losing your perfume while traveling, and you won't lose a whole bottle of your best perfume.
   • Although perfume is usually not worth pouring into other bottles, it can be done if you are traveling.

Part 3 of 3: Prevent Damage

1. 1 Make sure to keep a cap on the perfume bottle at all times. Remember to put on the cap after using the perfume. The less the perfume is exposed to the open air, the better.
   • Always close the lid tightly.
2. 2 Do not shake the perfume bottle. Many people shake the bottle before use. When you shake the bottle, the perfume is exposed to air, which can ruin it. If the instructions do not say to shake the perfume before use, do not do it.
3. 3 Use less applicators. Some bottles are equipped with a lid with an applicator stick, with which the perfume is applied to the desired areas of the body. These applicators provide a more accurate application of the perfume. However, along with them (in the case of reusable applicators), bacteria can be introduced into the perfume bottle and read off the particles from the skin, which will certainly lead to deterioration of the perfume.
   • Try to use perfume only as a spray.
   • If you still want to use the applicator, take a disposable one.
4. 4 Do not place fragile vials on high shelves. If the box falls from a high shelf, the fragile bottle will shatter, and you will lose an entire bottle of perfume. Store fragile vials in the bottom of a cabinet or bottom shelf.
   • This is especially important if you live in an area with frequent earthquakes.

Tips

• Depending on the storage method, the perfume can retain its original scent from 1 to 15 years.
