Learn to make candles that glow in the dark. They look interesting and neat, they are easy to make, and are a great project to do with your kids on a cold rainy day or any day in general.

Steps

1. 1 Remove all unnecessary items from the kitchen table. There are a lot of materials, so you will need a lot of space to work. Making gel candles is a lot like cooking - it all depends on the right timing, ingredients, and patience.
2. 2 Crush the gel candle into small pieces and place them in a melting dish. You can find ready-made gel candle making kits at hobby stores. Some candle makers advise using a water bath to melt the gel — bring the water to a boil in a large saucepan, then place a smaller mold with the pieces of gel in it. The water temperature cannot be higher than 100 degrees Celsius, because this is the maximum boiling point. Using this method, you do not run the risk that the gel will catch fire from overheating.
3. 3 Place the wick in a glass container. Dip the tip of the wick in hot gel. Let it cool for a few seconds, then place it in the center of the bottom of the container and press down a little with a pencil so that it sticks to the glass.
4. 4 Pour the glow-in-the-dark powder into a container of gel. About 30 g of powder is enough to make about 0.5 kg of gel glow like crazy. You can also add color and gel flavor at this stage. Only use a special gel candle fragrance, and don't take too much of it. You can read about the correct proportions on any internet site dedicated to candle making. Stir the mixture well so that the fluorescent powder is evenly distributed throughout the gel. Use a heat-resistant spatula that is available inexpensively at a home improvement store.
5. 5 Pour the gel into a glass container with a wick. Remember the gel is hot, so be careful! Don't let the kids do it on their own! You can use a wax melting pot or ladle with a spout to make pouring the mixture easier. Let the mixture cool and you have a candle that glows in the dark.

Tips

• The gel should not heat up to more than 93 degrees Celsius, so always keep a special thermometer on hand. In fact, the gel does not need to be heated more than 82 degrees Celsius - that's enough.
• The safest way to melt gel or wax is in a special saucepan. Search online for Presto Pot, or something similar. You can use it later to make candles or air fresheners.

Warnings

• If smoke starts to go from the gel, it means that it is overheated.
• Do not overheat the gel while melting. The temperature should not rise above 93 degrees Celsius. The steam bath will automatically adjust the temperature.
• Do not leave children unattended near hot gel.
• Candles themselves are dangerous because of the fire.Children should not be allowed to burn candles in their room. It is better to make them as a gift to relatives or not to use a wick - then it will be just a scent.
