This article will show you how to clear the list of "Recent Searches" in the Facebook Messenger app. The only way to do this is to ask Facebook Messenger to exit your login session - this is done with the Facebook app on the phone and the Facebook website.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: On the phone

1. 

   . It's the triangle icon in the top-right corner of the Facebook page. This will open up a list of choices.

   Click Settings (Settings) is near the bottom of the drop-down menu to open the Settings page.

   Click the card Security and Login (Security and Login) in the top-left corner of the page.

   Look for the "Where You’re Logged In" section in the middle of the page, but you may still have to drag the slider down to see the information.

   Find "Messenger" logins. In the "Where are you logged in" section, find the name of the phone or tablet where you signed into Messenger, then look for the word "Messenger" underneath the name of the phone / tablet. If you don't see the name of the phone or tablet you're looking for, choose See More (Find more) to see more logins.
   • If you see the word "Facebook" below the name of your phone or tablet, it's a login to the Facebook app, not Facebook Messenger.

   Click the icon ⋮ on the right side of the page, right at the Messenger login on your phone or tablet to open the menu next to this icon.

   Click Log Out (Log out) in the currently displayed menu. This will exit your account from the Messenger app on the currently selected phone or tablet.

   Sign back in to Messenger. Use your iPhone, Android, or tablet to open Messenger, then sign in with your Facebook email address (or phone number) and password. Once logged in, you can click the search bar at the top of the screen to see the "Recent Searches" section; This section is now out of information.
   • You need to wait a few seconds before Messenger realizes your account has been signed out.
   • When you sign back in to Messenger, you will be asked about syncing contacts with Messenger.
   • If for some reason the "Recent searches" section still shows information when you sign in again, you can try deleting the Facebook Messenger app and then reinstalling.

Advice

• The "Where you're logged in" section is also used to make sure your Facebook account isn't signed in to any other computers, phones or tablets that you don't use.

Warning

• You cannot sign out of Facebook Messenger on the app itself.
