This wikiHow teaches you how to change the keyboard layout of your computer on Ubuntu Linux 17.10.

Steps

1. 

   Make sure Ubuntu is up to date. Ubuntu version 17.10 or higher has many different options than the old version, so you need to upgrade your operating system to the latest version if you have not updated:
   • Open Terminal
   • Import sudo apt-get upgrade then press ↵ Enter.
   • Enter your password then tap ↵ Enter.
   • Type y appears, then press ↵ Enter.
   • Wait for the upgrade to install, then restart your computer when prompted.

   Open the Applications menu. Click the image button ⋮⋮⋮ in the lower left corner of the screen to open the list of apps.

   Click Settings (Setting). The gear-shaped option is in the Applications window. Ubuntu's settings will open.

   Click the card Region & Language (Country & language). Options are in the upper left of the Settings window.

   Click the mark ＋ below the current language in "Input Sources". A window will pop up.

   Select language. Click the language you want to use for the keyboard layout.
   • If the language you want to add is not in the list, click the mark ⋮ at the bottom of the menu, then choose your preferred language.

   Choose a keyboard layout. Scroll down through the layout options until you find a layout that suits you, then click to select.

   Click Add (Add) in the upper-right corner of the window. The layout will be added to the "Input Sources" section of your computer.

   Choose old keyboard layout. Click on the layout you used earlier. The option is under the "Input Sources" heading.

    Click the mark ∨ below the final keyboard here. The old layout will be moved down and make room for the new layout showing the top of the menu. So the new layout has become the default keyboard layout.
    • You can also completely delete the old keyboard layout by clicking on the mark - under "Input Sources".

Advice

• To view your keyboard layout, click on the layout you want to view, then click the keyboard icon below the "Input Sources" section.

Warning

• Not all layouts are compatible with a standard keyboard. Before choosing, you need to make sure that the keyboard is suitable for the layout you like.
