To step

Method 1 of 2: Part 1: Get a certificate

  1. Practice yoga regularly. Before you can start teaching yoga, you must dedicate yourself to its practice and master all postures perfectly. If you're a beginner, find a studio nearby and start taking lessons, eventually working your way up to the advanced group.
    • Explore the different types of yoga: Ashtanga, Bikram, Hatha, Iyengar, Kripalu are some types. Try out different lessons to see which kind you would like to teach.
  2. Decide where you want to teach yoga. Since there is no universally certified program for yoga teachers, you have to decide what requirements your studio has.
    • Approach the person who puts together your gym schedule, or the manager of the yoga studio where you would like to work. Ask them if they require a particular exercise program.
  3. Get the right training. Most studios want you to have approximately 200 hours of training before teaching a group. Again, ask for details at the gym or yoga studio where you would like to work.
    • Find a yoga school or studio that provides training for aspiring yoga teachers. These lessons don't just teach you the postures and routines; you will also learn about the anatomy of the body, injury prevention and the philosophy and history of yoga.
    • Consider doing advanced training. If you want to teach advanced learners, or if you want to learn how to teach yoga to special groups (for example, different age groups, or people with injuries), consider doing a 500-hour training program.
    • Keep your diploma up to date. Some studios require you to take additional courses on a regular basis. Follow these requirements as needed.
  4. Find a job as a teacher. Go to the studio (s) where you want to teach and join classes to get to know the atmosphere and style. Remember that all yoga studios are different.
    • Meet teachers and other staff. Share your experiences with them and ask them questions about the training programs they have. Make sure you have your CV and bring your diploma.
    • Go to different studios in the area to have multiple options.

Method 2 of 2: Part 2: Be an effective teacher

  1. Observe teachers with more experience. Whatever your education, the best way to improve your teaching style is to learn from more experienced colleagues. Take all kinds of different yoga classes in different studios from different teachers and enjoy the qualities of the best teachers you will encounter.
    • Pay close attention to teachers who have the largest classes. Take a good look at what they do differently, and adopt these methods if you are going to teach your own class.
  2. Feel comfortable in front of a group. Leading a class requires you to be able to connect with others one-on-one as well as speak easily in front of an entire group.
  3. Be versatile. A good yoga teacher can easily change his or her routine to keep lessons interesting and can tailor a particular lesson to the special needs of his or her students. The more experience you have, the better.
  4. Be positive. If you want people to keep coming to your class, you need to make sure they feel good about themselves. Keep them motivated with both positive affirmation and constructive criticism.
    • Pay attention to your students and give them feedback on how they are doing. This shows your students that you really care about them.
  5. Ask your students for feedback. Ask your students to occasionally complete a questionnaire about your lessons at the end of the lesson so that you can make improvements for the future.
