You organized a dinner and someone dropped their plate of spaghetti. The sauce has gotten on his clothes and your tablecloth. What can you do to remove the stains? Many types of tomato sauce, marinara sauce and similar sauces have oil and tomatoes as ingredients. Both ingredients can make stains difficult to remove. You may also have an item of clothing or a tablecloth with an old stain. Below you can read how to remove new as well as dried-on stains.

Method 1 of 3: Remove tomato sauce from acrylic, nylon, polyester, and spandex

1. Scrape the sauce off the fabric. Remove the sauce from the surface of the fabric as quickly as possible without pushing the sauce in further. You can use a paper towel or cloth to quickly wipe the tomato sauce off the fabric.
2. Let the stain dry in the sun. Place the garment in the sun with the stain side up and let the fabric dry completely. The UV rays should break down the last remnants of tomato sauce.

Method 3 of 3: Remove a dried stain

1. Wash the garment and let it dry in the sun. Follow the instructions on the care label and wash the garment as you normally would. Let the fabric dry in the sun with the stain facing up. The UV rays in the sunlight should break down the last remnants of tomato sauce.

Tips

• If possible, start removing the stain immediately. If it is not possible to deal with the stain immediately, you can still try to remove it later. The sooner you get there, the better it will go.
• You can dab a new stain with a white towel after rinsing it with water. Fold the towel over, blot the stain with it, and keep looking at the towel to see how much sauce you are removing. Keep dabbing and using a clean piece of the towel at a time until you see that no more sauce is coming out of the fabric.
• Check the care label in your garment. Take it to a dry cleaner if the garment should only be dry cleaned. Let the dry cleaner know what kind of stain it is and where it is located.

Warnings

• Do not put the garment in the dryer until the stain has completely disappeared. The heat can permanently set the stain into the fabric.
