Re-grouting your tiles is a simple job that can be done in a short time. The only aspect that takes time during this process is the drying of the joints. You just need some grout and some easy to use tools.

To step

Part 1 of 4: Preparing for grouting

  1. Determine which type of grout you want to use. This depends on the width of the joints (the distance between the tiles where the grout is applied). There are two types of grout for re-grouting tiles: with or without sand. Use grout with sand for joints wider than 0.3 cm. If your joints are narrower than 0.3 cm, choose the variant without sand, because it is more compact.
  2. Let the grout dry. Let the grout dry for 24 to 48 hours before walking on it to make sure it is firm and completely dry.
  3. Apply a final coat of sealant. Apply penetrating sealant to the joints with a sponge or spray bottle once the grout has dried completely. Immediately wipe off any excess sealant from the tiles, otherwise it will leave stains.

Tips

  • Do not add more grout than you will use up in 30 minutes, as the mixture will thicken and become unusable.
  • Don't add too much water to your grout. Because of this, you cannot properly apply it to your tiles with your trowel and it will run out of the joints. If the consistency is too thin, add some extra powder to thicken the mixture.
  • To make the joint extra strong, you can moisten the joints slightly twice a day for three days with a spray bottle. This is especially useful during the summer months, as the air can be very dry then.
  • If you can't get the grout veil off, try rubbing off the residue with a dry cloth or cheesecloth.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals until the grout has hardened.
  • Wear gloves when you work with grout. Grout can cause chemical burns, which can be very painful.
