We've all been there. You're brushing your teeth and a blob of toothpaste falls on your shirt. It's not that difficult to get toothpaste out of your clothes, but you will probably need to use some soap. Act quickly as toothpaste can leave permanent stains on clothes if not removed quickly.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Remove the stain immediately

  1. Scrape off as much of the stain as you can. It will be easier to remove the stain with chemicals and water if you remove as much of the toothpaste first as possible.
    • Try this with a small knife or sharp object to scrape off as much of the toothpaste as possible. Children should only do this under parental supervision. Just scrape very carefully so that you don't damage the clothing and cause holes in it. You just want to get the toothpaste off the surface.
    • Be careful not to rub the toothpaste too hard or you could push it even more into the tissue. You can also try brushing off some of the toothpaste with your fingers if you'd rather not use a knife. The sooner you try to remove the toothpaste, the easier it will come off.
    • If the toothpaste is on the clothes for a long time, it can affect the color of the clothes. Whitening toothpaste that contains bleach can damage clothes, especially if left on clothes for a long time.
  2. Read the washing instructions on the clothes. Water is often used to remove stains. You must ensure that the fabric cannot be damaged by water.
    • If the clothes are only allowed to dry clean, do not use water at all, otherwise it will leave a water stain.
    • If you don't have time to take the clothes to the dry cleaner, there are products available for dry stain removal.
  3. Dampen a soft cloth with warm water and blot the stain. This will loosen the stain a bit. Mix a few drops of laundry detergent with a cup of water. You can use stain remover instead of detergent.
    • First try to remove the stain immediately. Dip the cloth in the foaming water and gently pat or rub off the toothpaste. Once the detergent has gotten into the toothpaste stain, the stain should come off slightly.
    • Wet the area and apply pressure to your shirt with the water so that it squeezes out. If it still looks white, then it is not completely gone. The white spot is caused by titanium dioxide powder. That's why you probably need detergent to get it out.
    • Dab the area with water to rinse the fabric from the clothing. Let the stain air dry. Do not apply heat yet, as this can fix the stain in the clothing. This may be all you need to do. It depends on the nature of the stain. If the stain remains, wash the clothes more thoroughly.

Method 2 of 3: Wash the clothes to remove the toothpaste

  1. Wash the clothes in the washing machine with regular detergent. You should wash the clothes in a washing machine if the stain does not completely dissolve after trying to scrape and blot the clothes. This is important if you don't want the clothing to be permanently damaged.
    • If the garment can be put in the washing machine without problems, it will be the easiest and most thorough way to remove the stain.
    • It is usually a good idea to pre-treat the stain with laundry stain remover.
  2. Rinse the clothing with warm water or soak it in a bucket. Run the warm water from the back of the stain through the fabric. This should help pull the toothpaste out of the weave of the woven fabric.
    • Rub the stain (s) gently with your finger under water. Make sure the stains are out before drying your clothes. Drying will set the stain more into the fabric, making the stain more difficult to remove.
    • If the stain is still there, soak the clothes in a bucket of very warm water and some washing-up liquid for a few hours. Do not put the clothes in the dryer, but let them air dry until you are sure that no residue is left. If you find any toothpaste residue, repeat this procedure.
  3. Try it with dish soap. Once all the residue is left in the fabric of your clothes, remove most of the toothpaste and dish soap, then scrub the stain out completely.
    • First, scrape off as much of the toothpaste from the clothes as you can. Let the soap sit for about 10 minutes and then clean the garment as usual.
    • You only need a teaspoon of clear dishwashing liquid and a cup of water. Mix both and then use a clean cloth to rub the soapy water on the stain.

Method 3 of 3: Using other remedies to remove the toothpaste

  1. Add olive oil to the soapy water. Take a napkin and then collect some dish soap, water and olive oil. Pour the detergent and water together into a glass and stir it together.
    • Then take the oil and put it on the stain. Don't use too much oil or it could ruin the clothes.
    • Pour the soapy water onto the toothpaste stain. After a few minutes, wipe it off. You may need to wash the clothes even further in a bucket or washing machine. However, this should help remove the stain.
  2. Put lemon on the stain. Take a lemon and cut it in half. Then rub the pulp side on the stain for about a minute.
    • Wash it off with normal washing powder. You can also mix freshly squeezed lemons with baking soda, which is a natural remedy that is great to use for cleaning.
    • Wait for the effervescence to stop. Once it is done, mix it again until it becomes paste. Then slowly rub the mixture over the stain. Use a teaspoon of baking soda on two teaspoons of lemon juice. You can also try rubbing alcohol on the stain.
  3. Put vinegar on the stain. Vinegar gets stains and foul smells from almost everything. Wash a small load of clothes with a cup of vinegar or add some to your bucket of water.
    • You can also pretreat the clothes with vinegar if it is super stained or smelly. Then put it in the washing machine according to the instructions above.
    • It is best to use white natural vinegar. Mix one part vinegar with two parts water. Stir it together and apply to the stain. Let it soak into the clothes for about a minute. Then pat the area dry with a clean, dry cloth. Rinse and wash the clothes.

Tips

  • Brush your teeth in the shower and you don't have to worry about this kind of thing!

Warnings

  • Be even more careful with clothing when using whitening toothpastes.
  • Remember that it is important that the stain is gone before you heat the clothing.
