Do you like s'mores but don't have a campfire or fireplace? Fortunately, you can also make them indoors with your microwave! There are a number of ways to make basic s'more, and even more ways to make them even better!

Ingredients

Basic microwave s'more

  • 1 graham cracker (not impossible but hard to find in the Netherlands; digestive biscuits are a pretty good substitute for this)
  • 1 small chocolate bar
  • 1 marshmallow

Serves 1 person

Easy microwave s'more

  • 1 graham cracker (not impossible but hard to find in the Netherlands; digestive biscuits are a pretty good substitute for this)
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons of chocolate spread
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons of marshmallow spread

To step

Method 1 of 3: Make a basic microwave s'more

  1. Break a graham cracker in half. Place one of the graham cracker halves on a plate covered with a paper towel. Set the other half aside. The paper towel will keep the cracker from getting soggy.
    • If you can't find graham crackers, use another similar honey-cinnamon-flavored cracker or two digestive biscuits.
  2. Break off a piece of chocolate and place it on the graham cracker. If you are using a large chocolate bar that is divided into pieces, use that as a guide for breaking it. The chocolate should be slightly smaller than the graham cracker.
  3. Place a marshmallow on top of the graham cracker. Lay it flat side down so it doesn't roll away when you move the board. Don't put the other graham cracker half on top just yet; you will at the end.
  4. Heat the s'more in the microwave on high heat for 15 seconds. Place the plate with the s'more on it in the microwave and heat it over high heat for 15 seconds. The chocolate will start to melt and soften, and the marshmallow will turn puffy.
    • If the marshmallow expands too much, heat the s'more in 5 second intervals. Drain the marshmallow before heating it again.
  5. Remove the plate from the microwave and place the other graham cracker half on top of the marshmallow. Press down on the s'more to shut it down. Be careful not to press too hard so that the graham cracker doesn't break.
  6. Let the s'more cool for a few minutes before eating it. Smores are tasty while still warm, but they won't be much fun to eat if you burn your tongue!

Method 2 of 3: Make an easy microwave s'more

  1. Break a graham cracker in half so that you get two squares. If you can't find graham crackers, use another similar honey-cinnamon-flavored cracker or two digestive biscuits.
  2. Cover one of the graham crackers with some chocolate spread. You can use any type of chocolate spread for this, such as Nutella. You can also use chocolate fudge sauce instead. If you're going to use chocolate fudge sauce, make sure it's cold and thick like butter; do not heat it beforehand or let it melt beforehand.
  3. Cover the other graham cracker with marshmallow spread. If you can't find a marshmallow spread, you can use one regular marshmallow or four mini marshmallows.
  4. Press the two graham crackers together, then place them on a plate. Place the chocolate and marshmallow sides together, making sure the corners match up. Place a paper towel under the s'more to keep it from getting soggy in the microwave.
  5. Heat the graham cracker with the marshmallow on high heat in the microwave for 10 seconds. If you are making more than one s'more at a time, you may need to increase the heating time to 20 to 30 seconds.
  6. Gently press down on the s'more to seal it off. Press hard enough to make the s'more stick together, but not so hard that the marshmallow runs out or the cracker breaks.
  7. Let the s'more cool down for a while before eating it. Because you have not heated the chocolate, you will not have to wait that long. A few seconds to a minute will be enough. Smores are super tasty, but not when they burn your mouth!

Method 3 of 3: Step up a gear

  1. Experiment with different types of cookies. Graham crackers are sweet, so other types of cracker crackers or cookies will work as well. Try it with vanilla-flavored wafer cookies or even chocolate chip cookies.
    • If you're using a wafer cookie, consider using a mini marshmallow instead of regular marshmallow, or cutting a larger marshmallow in half to make a short marshmallow.
  2. Experiment with different types of chocolate. Milk chocolate is most often used to make smores, but white or dark chocolate may appeal to you more. If you like to eat very sweet things, you may prefer white chocolate, and if you don't like very sweet things, dark chocolate may be best for your smores.
    • You can also use chocolate filled with mint or even peanut butter.
  3. Add some crunch with cereal. After microwaving your s'more, add some of your favorite cereal on top of the melted marshmallow. Then quickly place the other graham cracker half on top, and gently press down on it.
  4. Add some fruit. After heating your s'more in the microwave, before squeezing the halves, add one or two slices of banana or strawberry. You can even both use these fruits for the ultimate treat.
    • For extra flavor, spread some strawberry jam or compote over the top of the second graham cracker half before assembling the s'more.
  5. Add a chocolate peanut butter twist. Make your s'more as usual, but instead of regular graham crackers, use chocolate flavored graham crackers. Instead of a chocolate bar or chocolate spread, use 1 to 2 tablespoons of peanut butter without chunks.
  6. Add some color and texture with nonpareils. Make a small bowl or plate full of nonpareils (shaped like very small balls). Make your s'more, then dip each of the four sides in the nonpareils. These will stick to the melted chocolate and marshmallow to give the s'more some color.
  7. Make some fancy s'mores by sprinkling some melted chocolate on top. After you have warmed up and assembled your s'mores, melt some chocolate in the microwave and then spread it over the s'mores. Place the s'mores in the fridge for a few minutes to allow the chocolate to harden, then eat them!
    • For a little more color, sprinkle the melted chocolate with some small candies or nonpareils before it hardens.
  8. Ready!

Tips

  • Every microwave is different, and some are stronger than others. Your cooking times may vary.
  • You can also use minimarshmallows. Simply place four mini marshmallows on the graham cracker.
  • You can make more than one s'more at a time, but you may need to heat them longer.
  • Try out other types of marshmallows. The sugar-coated marshmallows shaped like bunnies sold at Easter will work well for Easter or spring themed s'mores.
  • S'mores can very be sweet. If you don't have a big sweet tooth, use dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.
  • Experiment with different types of chocolate: white, milk, dark, salted or even caramel.
  • Consider using rectangular or square marshmallows if you can find them. These are for smores, so they fit better.
  • The more chocolate the better!

Warnings

  • The marshmallow will expand when you heat it in the microwave. If it starts to get too big, pause the microwave and wait for the marshmallow to drain before heating it further.
  • The s'more will be hot! Let it cool down a bit before you start eating.
