Many women choose to take care of their pubic area by removing some or all of the pubic hair. There are several ways to do this safely, whether you want to prevent ingrown hairs, or if you have hygienic or aesthetic reasons. You can shave off your pubic hair at home, remove it with a depilatory cream, or use cold wax. Or if you want to get expert help, you can also have it removed with hot wax or a laser device.

To step

Method 1 of 5: Shave

  1. Decide which part you want to shave off. You don't have to shave off all of your pubic hair. Depending on the reason you shave it, you can either shave off just the bikini area (i.e., the part that is visible when wearing a bikini), or remove all of your hair. Choose the amount of hair that makes you feel good - for example, you can choose not to remove the hair on your labia or around your anus. Do what you feel comfortable with!
    • If you want, you can even shave shapes in your pubic hair, such as a triangle or a square!
  2. Trim your hair before shaving them off. Be careful not to get too close to your skin or you could injure yourself. Use a handheld mirror so you can see it clearly, and stop cutting if you think you are getting too close to your skin. The goal is to shorten the hair, not cut it all the way at the root.
  3. Take a warm bath or shower for 5-10 minutes before shaving. The warm water will soften your skin and relax your hair follicles, making it a more pleasant experience.
  4. Exfoliate before shaving to prevent ingrown hairs. Choose a mild exfoliating cream, preferably with natural ingredients. Apply the product in circular motions and scrub very gently for 30 seconds. Then rinse it clean with warm water.
    • Do not scrub or shave if you have open wounds or if your skin has been burned by the sun.
  5. Apply shaving cream or gel. Be careful not to get foam into your vagina. Apply the cream only on the outside of the labia, applying a little more if needed. Use a clear shaving cream or gel so you can see where the hairs are.
    • In an emergency, you can also use conditioner, although you shouldn't make a habit of it, as it lacks the moisturizing properties of most shaving creams.
    • Do not use soap or shampoo instead of shaving cream.
  6. Use a sharp razor. Consider getting a new blade if you are going to shave your pubic hair. Take the razor you are used to using and remember that the larger the blade, the more difficult it will be to handle.
    • To make it easier, you can use a razor with a moisturizing strip. Then shaving will be faster and smoother.
  7. Stretch the skin with one hand. The tricky thing about shaving pubic hair is that your vagina has few straight, flat surfaces. Create a flat surface by gently stretching the skin with your non-dominant hand, then shave with your dominant hand.
  8. Shave in the direction of hair growth. If you shave with the growth of your hair instead of against it, you will prevent ingrown hairs. Shave slowly and evenly without rushing. Rinse your razor regularly to get rid of trapped hairs for a smoother result.
  9. Rinse your skin when you are done. Remove all shaving cream and hair. If you accidentally cut yourself while shaving, wash off the blood too, and don't worry! A small cut is okay. However, go to the emergency room if you have seriously injured yourself.
  10. Rub some baby oil or aloe vera gel on your skin for softening. Baby oil also helps with breakouts, but aloe vera gel is better for sensitive skin. Apply it until the entire area is covered with a thin layer. Reapply later if necessary.
    • Do not use aftershave or regular moisturizing lotion as it can sting terribly!

Method 2 of 5: Using depilatory cream

  1. Trim your hair short before applying the cream. Be careful with the scissors so you don't injure yourself. If you notice that the scissors are getting too close to your skin, stop cutting.
  2. Test a little bit of cream on your arm before you start. Before using an unfamiliar substance, it is always good to try it on a small area of your skin. To do this, use your arm or thigh to see if the cream is causing redness, pain, or some other negative reaction. Do not use the cream in your pubic area if that happens!
    • Wait 24 hours after the test before using the cream in your pubic area.
  3. Do not use the cream on sensitive areas. If you didn't get a negative reaction during the test, you can probably use the cream safely on your pubic hair. However, take precautions so that the cream does not get into your vagina. Only use the cream to remove hair on the outside of your vagina, but make sure it doesn't get on the inside of your labia.
  4. Apply a thin layer of cream with the spatula provided in the package. Spread the cream smoothly and evenly, taking care not to allow it to build up anywhere. Follow the instructions in the package and wash your hands after use. Never spread the cream on the most sensitive parts! Rather stick to your bikini line.
    • If any cream gets between your labia, rinse it off immediately.
  5. Wait the recommended time. The waiting time differs depending on the type of hair removal cream. Set an alarm and make sure you can remove the cream right away when the time is up.
    • Deepline should be removed after 8-10 minutes.
    • Veet should act for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Rinse it off in the shower. Turn on the shower and gently rinse off any depilatory cream. Use a washcloth to wipe everything off. Your hair should go off with the cream. If not, wait 24 hours and try again.

Method 3 of 5: Cold wax

  1. Buy a set for waxing. You can buy sets with wax at the drugstore or supermarket. A set usually contains wax for several times. Know that there are different sets for different body parts, so make sure the set you buy is suitable for pubic hair.
    • A set of wax costs between 5 and 15 euros.
  2. Trim your hairs so that they are about half an inch long. If your hair is too long, you will find it harder to pull it out, or it will hurt a lot more because you pull the hair in different directions. If your hair is too short, the wax strips have less grip and waxing will not work well.
    • You just need to cut the hair you want to wax. Decide whether you want to get everything out or just remove hair from your bikini line.
  3. Prevent ingrown hairs and reduce pain by exfoliating first. Use an exfoliating cream or exfoliating glove to remove dead skin cells before waxing.
  4. Warm the cold wax strips between your hands. Rub the wax strips with your hands to warm them with your body heat. Then the wax sticks better to your hair. Don't heat them in the microwave or in hot water - your body heat is enough to get them warm.
  5. Put baby powder on your skin. Baby powder helps absorb moisture from your skin, making the strips adhere to it more easily.
  6. Stretch the skin. This is especially important with waxing, as you are going to pull on your skin. Use your non-dominant hand to keep the skin as taut as possible. It may hurt a little, but not too much. If it really hurts, keep your skin a little less taut.
  7. Apply the wax strip and rub with your hair growth to press it down. Make sure the wax strip is firmly attached to your skin. Rub it so that all corners and edges are secured.
  8. Pull quickly. Don't be afraid of the pain - waxing does hurt, but if you take the strip off slowly, it will fail and have to be done again. In addition, slow pulling is even more painful. Imagine taking a patch off your skin and doing it in one go.
    • Take a deep breath in and out as you pull off the wax strip to distract yourself from the pain.
  9. Soften the skin with baby oil or aloe vera gel. If you have sensitive skin, aloe vera will soften the skin after a cold wax. Apply a thin layer, and repeat this whenever necessary. Never use aftershave or regular lotion as it can be very painful and dry out the skin.

Method 4 of 5: Get a professional wax

  1. Do not shave three weeks before waxing. If you shave regularly but want to switch to waxing, don't shave for three weeks to allow hair to grow. If you've never removed pubic hair before, cut it a little shorter first. The ideal length is 0.5 cm.
  2. Determine what type of waxing you want. There are two types: the bikini line (which removes hairs from the top and sides of your vagina) and the Brazilian Wax (which removes everything). Decide how much hair you want to remove and choose which type you want.
    • If you are just starting out, don't take the Brazilian Wax right away as it can be very painful. Start slowly by getting your bikini line waxed a few times.
  3. Find a beauty salon where you feel comfortable. Check out beauticians and hair removal salons near you. An easy way to find a spot is to call all beauticians and ask if they wax too. Ask how they do it, how they guarantee hygiene and what the waxing costs.
    • Depending on where you live, professional waxing costs between € 25 and € 80.
  4. Take a pain reliever before getting waxed. Waxing is never painless, but the pain can be controlled. Take a normal dose of painkillers to prepare for the session. If you have a low pain threshold, take some painkillers with you for after the treatment. Do not take more than a standard dose before getting waxed.
  5. Do not worry that you will feel uncomfortable during the treatment. Getting a professional waxed for the first time can make you feel uncomfortable or nervous about having to undress with a stranger - but don't worry! You will be assisted by an expert.
    • If you still don't feel comfortable after a few times, try listening to music or an audiobook while you are being treated. Then you can focus your attention on something else.
    • If the beautician makes you feel uncomfortable, or if he / she does something inappropriate, get out as soon as possible and report it to the manager or the police.
  6. Exhale as the wax strip is pulled off. While it is easy to do, waxing can cause pain. Don't grind your teeth or tighten your muscles or it will only make things worse. Rather focus on your breathing as the strips are pulled off.
    • They say it hurts less if you get waxed right after your period!
  7. Wear comfortable underwear and a skirt or loose pants. Your skin will be sensitive for a while after the treatment. Prepare for that sensitivity by wearing soft, cotton underwear and a skirt or loose pants.
    • Don't wear tight pants or underwear for at least a day after waxing.
  8. Scrub one week after the treatment. To keep your pubic area smooth and prevent irritation or ingrown hairs, you can exfoliate your skin with a loofah after a week.

Method 5 of 5: Invest in laser hair removal

  1. Don't think about laser hair removal if you have very light hair or dark skin. Laser hair removal works best on fair skin with dark hair. If your hair is too light, the laser cannot find your hair follicles (which is necessary for the laser hair removal). If your skin is too dark, the laser may mistake your skin for your hair follicles and burn your skin.
    • New lasers, such as the Nd: YAG work better on darker skin types, but make sure you inquire first if the salon you want to go to has that laser.
  2. Set aside money for the laser hair removal. The average price of laser hair removal depends on whether you only want to have your bikini area removed or if you want to get rid of all your pubic hair. The average price of bikini line hair removal starts at € 85 per treatment. Depilation of the entire pubic area starts at € 150 per treatment.
  3. Do not wax your hair for at least 4 weeks before undergoing laser hair removal. With laser hair removal, the hair follicles must be intact, and with waxing you remove the hair follicles. Ensure successful laser hair removal by not waxing for at least a month in advance.
  4. Shave in preparation for treatment. To make the laser hair removal as successful as possible, you must shave off all your pubic hair the night before the treatment. Do not use a depilatory cream as the chemicals in it can cause pain or irritation in combination with the laser.
  5. Don't feel uncomfortable. You may be nervous or a little scared of being naked with a stranger, but don't worry. You are dealing with experts. If you want to distract yourself, listen to the sound the laser makes.
    • If the person operating the laser does or says anything inappropriate, end the session as soon as possible and report it to the manager or the police.
  6. Tell the practitioner if it hurts. Laser hair removal usually feels like light, slightly unpleasant injections. If it hurts or feels very hot, tell the practitioner so they can lower the intensity. Don't think you won't get your money's worth - if it stings, it works!
  7. Don't be surprised if your hair starts to fall out. Laser hair removal is not immediately visible. It takes about 2 weeks for the effect to show, and until then your hair will grow as normal. After 2-3 weeks, the hairs will fall out. Then you can shave it again.
  8. Prepare for multiple treatments. Laser hair removal may require 1 to 10 treatments until all hair is permanently removed. Most people need about 6 treatments.

Warnings

  • Be very careful if you shave or wax your pubic hair while you have your period, as the pubic area is very sensitive.
  • Always use clean materials. Do not use a blade that is old or rusty, as you could be injured.
