The most common way to darken red paint is to mix the red with another color. You can mix two different shades of red to adjust the paint just a little bit, or mix red with green or blue to drastically change the red tone without dampening it. Neutral colors such as black and brown can be added to red paint to change the color more strongly. You can also apply several layers of paint or use a different type of paint to give the red a different look.

Method 1 of 3: Using red, green, or blue paint

  1. Add a bit of green paint to make a deeper red color. Complementary colors can be mixed to create different brown tones. If you want to darken a red shade a bit without adding black, use a little green to give your red paint a brown undertone. Start by adding one part green to ten parts red before using a large amount of green.
    • Dark colors quickly make lighter colors of paint darker. So be careful and start with a small amount of green before adding more.
    • You can find the complementary color of a color in the color circle by looking at the color that is opposite the color in question.
    • If you add black to a color, it will automatically absorb more light. Adding a little green is a good way to keep the red hue bright and vibrant without making a room feel smaller or a painting getting less depth.
  2. Switch from oil paint on acrylic paint if you paint on a canvas. Oil paint usually has richer and brighter colors. Acrylic paint is often dull and dries darker. If you want to use a particular shade of red but need to deepen the shade, use acrylic paint instead of oil paint.

Warning: you will have to work differently when you switch from oil paint to acrylic paint. Oil paint takes several days to dry completely, while acrylic paint dries within minutes.
