Netflix has finally introduced the ability to remove movies and series from the "recently watched" list in your Netflix account. You can breathe again, because now you can be sure that no one will find out what embarrassing things you watched. Additionally, you can use the "Profiles" feature to keep your "recently viewed" list separate from others using the same account. Unfortunately, it is not possible to delete recently watched movies or series with the Netflix mobile app. You must log in to Netflix with a computer browser to edit the list.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Delete recently watched movies and series

  1. Sign up on the Netflix website, not the app. On a computer or tablet, log in to http://www.netflix.com using your internet browser. According to Netflix customer service, you cannot access this option with the mobile app, but you can with a mobile browser.
    • If your mobile device does not have a browser, log in with a computer. Changes you make on one device will be visible on your other devices within 24 hours.
  2. Select your profile. When a list of names appears after logging in, select your own profile. Each profile has a separate list of viewing activity.
    • If no list appears, check the top right corner of the screen for a name and a square image (usually a face). If this is not your profile, click on the image and select the icon of your own profile.
  3. Go to the "My Activity" page. Go to https://www.netflix.com/WiViewingActivity to see a list of the movies and series you have recently watched. You can also get here by clicking the square profile icon in the top right corner, selecting My Account from the drop-down menu, then scrolling down and clicking Viewing Activity in the "My Profile" section.
    • If you are watching Netflix on a device other than your computer and the Viewing Activity list is empty, try turning the device off and then on again.
  4. Click on the gray "X" to the right of a movie title. This will remove that specific movie from the "Recently Watched" list. It can take up to 24 hours for it to disappear on other devices, but it usually happens much faster.
  5. Delete an entire television series. Click the X next to an episode of a specific series. A message will appear with a link that says Delete series ?; if you click on this link, the entire series will be removed from the viewing activity within 24 hours.
    • In this case, series refers to all episodes of a series over several years, so all viewed seasons of a particular series will be deleted.

Method 2 of 2: Manage your settings with profiles

  1. Go to your profile page on a device that supports Netflix. You can do this on a computer, PS3, PS4, or the Netflix app on Windows 8. Sign in to Netflix and hover your mouse over the square profile picture and name in the top right corner. Click Manage Profiles to access the settings as described below. Once you make a change it will be applied to all your devices, but you may need to reboot a device to see the change.
  2. Use profiles to separate viewing history. Create a new profile for each family member (up to five profiles) by clicking Add Profile, then enter a name. Netflix will now ask you which profile you want to use every time you log in. Your viewing history and ratings are then linked to the relevant profile, it is separated from the other profiles.
    • Profiles are not password protected, so switching back and forth between profiles is quite easy. The method is useful if you want to keep the "Recently Viewed" lists separate, but it is not a reliable way to hide information from other family members.
  3. Create a temporary profile to prevent titles from being added to "Recently Viewed". Before watching a movie that you don't want others to find out about, create a new profile by clicking the Add Profile button or the big plus sign next to it. When you have finished viewing, go back to the Profile Manager page and click Edit next to the temporary profile name and then click Delete. Click Delete again to confirm that you intend to do so.
    • Note: you can only create five profiles on an account.
  4. Clear your entire Netflix history by switching to a new profile. This will remove your ratings and content from "My List", so only do this if you are sure you want to get rid of your old content. Create a new profile by clicking the Add profile button and then delete your old profile.
  5. Create a profile for children or teenagers. Click Edit next to your child's profile. The word Adults now changes to a drop-down menu. You can now choose from "Small children", "Older children" or "Teenagers". Click Done to save the change. Anyone using that profile from that point on will only be able to watch movies and series that are suitable for children of that age, as determined by national rules and by Netflix itself.
    • A profile cannot be password protected, so a child can still log in to another family member's profile and view adult content that way.
    • Only in Germany can a password be set that must be entered before watching adult movies and series. This option does not exist in the Netherlands.

Tips

  • Netflix is currently testing "privacy mode", a setting that, when enabled, does not add movies to the "Recently Watched" list. It is not known when this function will be accessible to everyone. If you want to be able to use new Netflix features before they are officially added, log in to a computer, go to My Account and click Test Participate. Click the button that now appears to move the slider to the "On" position.
  • If these methods don't work, you can also watch many movies for a few seconds, pushing old movies off the list. You may need to check out more than a hundred movies to completely change the "Recently Watched" list, but watching 10 or 20 pieces of film can make the list a lot less embarrassing at first glance.

Warnings

  • Deleting a profile also removes all ratings from that profile and the selection of movies in "My List".
  • Profiles are not password protected. Even a child can easily figure out how to switch between different profiles and watch movies that are not suitable for his / her age.
