Dry hair does not look beautiful and is unhealthy, but luckily you can easily do something about it. Just learn some new habits and make them part of your daily routine, stop using harmful hair care methods and apply natural products to keep your brittle hair looking healthy and beautiful.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Softening your hair

  1. Cut split ends. Split ends are damaged hairs that lose moisture quickly. If you don't get your hair cut regularly, your hair can get damaged further upwards. Have your hair ends cut by a hairdresser so that all damaged parts are completely removed.
    • Trim your split ends every few months or whenever you feel like them.
  2. Use conditioner once a day. Conditioner nourishes your hair with important oils and keeps it healthy, supple and soft.
  3. Let your hair air dry. The hot air from a hair dryer dries out your hair and causes split ends. Instead, pat your hair dry with a towel and then let your hair air dry. If you still want to use a hair dryer, set it to the cold setting.
  4. Hydrate your body throughout your day. Your hair, like all other parts of the body, needs water to stay soft and healthy. Drink at least four or five glasses of water a day every day.
    • During exercise, drink an extra 250-300 ml of water for every hour that you are exercising.
  5. Take vitamin pills that make your hair healthy. Certain nutritional supplements, such as omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids from fish eggs, vitamin E and biotin, make your hair shine and grow faster. Buy supplements from your local drug store or health food store and take them daily.
  6. Massage your hair with coconut oil. Warm the oil in a small container in the microwave, just enough to liquefy the oil. Slightly dampen your hair with water. Using your hands, smooth the oil from the center of your hair (near your ears) to the ends of your hair. Let the oil sit in your hair for at least an hour, or let the oil sit overnight if possible.
    • Wash the coconut oil from your hair with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
    • You can also apply oil to your roots, but you may have to wash your hair several times to get the oil out.
  7. Apply olive oil, almond oil, or aloe vera oil once a week. These oils are well-known home remedies for dry hair and can be bought at the supermarket. Simply massage the oil into your hair from roots to ends and leave it on for two to three hours.
    • Put on a shower cap to prevent oil from dripping from your hair.
    • Wash the oil from your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
  8. Make a hair mask with avocado, olive oil and honey to use on a monthly basis. In a small bowl, combine a ripe avocado, two tablespoons (30 ml) of olive oil and two tablespoons (30 ml) of honey with a whisk or hand mixer. Apply the mixture to your hair from roots to ends. Leave the mixture on for at least two hours and use it once a month.

Part 2 of 2: Preventing dry hair

  1. Do not use heat to straighten, style and curl your hair. Regular use of a hair dryer, flat iron, or curling iron can severely damage your hair. Heat dries out your hair and makes it rough, dull and damages it.
  2. Be satisfied with your natural hair color. Unfortunately, hair dye damages your hair and prevents it from remaining soft. Most preparations intended for pre-treating hair to be dyed contain ammonia, which weakens hair and damages hair follicles. Regularly dyeing your hair can make it dry, dull and limp.
  3. Blonde your hair as little as possible. Try out a dark blonde shade and wait longer to bleach. Bleaching agent dries out your hair and it can take months to recover.
  4. Look for ways to style your hair without using harmful clips. Instead of straightening or curling your hair, use non-alcoholic gel or mousse to shape your hair. Do not use hair clips or other hinged clips as they will likely damage your hair. Bobby pins that have been lightly sprayed with hairspray are an excellent alternative to style your hair.
  5. Shampoo your hair only every two or three days. If you wash your hair too often, you wash all natural oils from your hair. After shampooing, always use conditioner to nourish your hair with essential oils.
  6. Do not comb your hair while it is still wet. Your hair is weak when wet, so don't brush or comb it for 20-30 minutes after shampooing.

Tips

  • Check your hair regularly for split ends, as well as hair that is split into multiple sections at the ends.
  • Find a shampoo and conditioner that work for you. Everyone has different hair, so try different variants to see which products make your hair softest.

Warnings

  • Taking a hot shower can damage your hair just as much as heat, so use lukewarm or cool water whenever possible.
