If you have fine, thin hair, you may be jealous of the sky-high hairstyles you see on the runway. Don't give up hope, though! With the right haircut and a little styling, anyone can have voluminous hair!

To step

Method 1 of 4: Add volume in the shower

  1. Wash your hair with a volume shampoo. Some shampoo formulas can make your hair look lifeless, so choose one designed specifically to give your hair a lift.
    • Well-known volume shampoos include Pantene Pro-V Full & Strong, Matrix Biolage Volume Bloom, Kiehl’s Ultimate Thickening Shampoo and Head & Shoulders Full & Thick.
  2. Spray your hair with dry shampoo for volume the day after shampooing. If your hair looks limp and greasy the day after shampooing, use dry shampoo on your roots to soak up oil and add volume. Spray the dry shampoo on the first 2-5 cm of your hair, especially around your hairline and on the crown.
    • Massage the dry shampoo into the roots of your hair with your fingers and let it sit for a few minutes, then comb it through to the ends of your hair. This will help absorb oil along the length of your hair, especially at the roots where it accumulates the most.

Method 2 of 4: Dry your hair

  1. Use rollers at the top of your hair for an extra lift. If your hair is long enough for rollers, this is a great way to add volume to your roots. Depending on the size of the rollers, divide the middle part of your hair - the part where a mohawk would be - into 3-4 strands. Wrap each section of hair around a roller as you get dressed or put on your makeup.
    • If you are using warm rollers, leave them in your hair until they cool.
    • If you are using foam rollers or other rollers that have not been heated, dry the roots of your hair with your hair dryer, then leave them in until your hair has cooled.
    • Gently roll your hair when it has cooled and then style it with your fingers.
  2. Add clip-in hair extensions for extra volume. Hair extensions aren't always just for creating length. Extensions cut to the same length as your hair can give your hair a lot more volume. Comb your hair back a bit first to hide the clips, then pin the extensions a few inches from your roots.
    • Make sure your hair is thick enough to cover the extensions. Clip-in extensions are usually placed quite close to the roots, so even if your hair is on the thin side, they don't have to be flashy. If you place them a few inches from the roots, they may still be visible in thin hair.
  3. Cut your hair short or medium for more bounce. Once your hair is shoulder length, it is going to hang down. Go for a hairstyle that falls between your chin and collarbone - or even shorter if you prefer!
    • Create a voluminous look with very short hair by cutting the sides closer to your head and leaving the top a little longer. Style the top with a volume product and a round brush to lift it.
  4. Opt for a blunt haircut for the fullest look. Layers can make your hair thinner, especially if you choose a style with many layers. Instead, opt for a bob or similar style with a strong, blunt line at the bottom to make your hair appear fuller.
    • Avoid blunt haircuts done with a razor. These can make your hair look frizzy and even thinner.
  5. Create highlights to add dimension. If you don't mind coloring your hair, highlights can create a 3D effect that makes your hair appear fuller. Lighter highlights should be closer to the top, while less prominent highlights and your natural hair color should fall further down.
