If you bought a game on Steam and it doesn't quite meet your expectations, you may be able to get a refund. To do this, you must fill in a special form on the Steam website. If your request is approved, the money should be back in your bank account within a week. However, sometimes a request for a refund is rejected. To avoid a rejection, it is important that you request a refund within a specified time and have a valid reason to do so.

Part 1 of 3: Submit your request

1. Go to "Steam Help". Log in to your Steam account. Click on the "Steam Help" tab at the top of the screen.
2. Indicate that you need help with a purchase. If you clicked on "Steam Help", you will be taken to a list of multiple options. Near the bottom of the list you will find the option "purchases". Click on this.
3. Select the game for which you want to request a refund. After clicking "Purchases", you should be presented with a list of all the games you have purchased on Steam. Select the game for which you want to request a refund.
4. Describe the problem. After selecting a game, you must indicate the reason you want your money back. Possible options to choose from include "does not meet expectations", "a technical problem" or "accidentally bought".
5. Request your money back. In the next screen, choose the option "I want my money back". You can add a comment or additional details to your request in this screen. Then click on the "submit" button.
   • For example, a comment you can leave in the comment box is: "I wanted to buy the latest version of this game and it was not clear on the website that this was the old version."

Part 2 of 3: Getting a response

1. Check your email for confirmation. After submitting your request, you should receive confirmation by email pretty soon. If you haven't received a confirmation within a few hours, you can call the Steam helpline to make sure they have your request received.
2. Wait a week for a response. It may take a while for you to receive a response and get your money back. Sometimes a refund goes very quickly, other times it takes a little longer. This may be because many requests have been received at the same time. So be patient.
3. Check your bank account to make sure you got your money back. Once you've received confirmation that your request has been approved, keep an eye on your bank account. The money should be back in your account within a few days. If not within a week, contact Steam by phone to make sure they have the correct information about you.

Part 3 of 3: Avoid rejection

1. Make sure to submit the request within 14 days of purchasing the game. You usually have fourteen days to request a refund. Sometimes you can also get a refund if you submit a request after fourteen days, but that chance is small. It is therefore wise to submit your request as soon as possible.
2. Don't ask for your money back too often. While there are no rules on how often you can get your money back, it is not wise to do that very often in succession. If you do, you risk receiving an email with a warning. Some people buy a game just to get certain rewards and achievements. When they have received it, they request their money back. For that reason, Steam is very alert if someone requests his or her money back several times in a row.
3. Keep the conditions in mind if you want to return a game that was intended as a gift. If you are requesting a refund for a game that you have bought to give to someone, please do so before giving the game away. If you have already given the game as a gift, but the birthday boy or girl is not happy with it, let him or her request a refund.
4. Don't just give up if your refund request is rejected. If a request for a refund is denied, you can "appeal". You can do this simply by re-submitting a refund request. So you repeat all the steps you took before. This time you can give an even better and more extensive reason in the comments box why you want your money back. Sometimes Steam will change its mind and give you your money back.
