Gel nails are stylish and sturdy but take quite a bit of work to apply. With the right tools and techniques, you can create a professional looking gel manicure. To add length and drama, glue in a set of nail tips before applying the gel. You will need to use a buffer block to roughen the shiny surface of both your natural nails and the tips, but once you've done that, you can apply all layers of gel from your cuticle to the free edge of the fake nail tip. Let the gel cure under a UV or LED nail lamp and don't forget to polish the edges with a nail file before finishing the manicure.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Preparing your natural nails

  1. Start with clean nails without nail polish. Before starting the manicure, remove old nail polish, gel nails, or tips. Use acetone to get rid of all traces of the old manicure, then wash your hands so that you have a raw surface to put the new manicure on.
    • Remove nail polish with acetone and a cotton ball.
    • Wrap the old gel nails in acetone-soaked cotton pads before scraping the gel off.
    • Get rid of old tips and scraps of nail glue with an acetone bath.
  2. Rub your nails with gel cleanser to remove dust and oils. Wet a cotton ball with gel cleanser and rub it over the surface of your nails. Continue rubbing until all the polishing dust and any remaining natural oils are gone.
    • Dust and natural oils interfere with the gel's ability to adhere to your natural nail, so it is very important to clean your nails before applying nail glue or gel.

Part 2 of 3: Applying the tips

  1. Choose natural or transparent tips in the shape and length you want. Depending on the manicure style you are going for, choose one of the available lengths and shapes of the nail tips, making sure to use either clear or natural tips.
    • Popular shapes of tips are "coffin" (or ballerina), almond, stiletto, square, round or oval, and "squoval".
    • These usually come in lengths of extra-short, short, medium, long, and extra-long.
    • Do not use white tips as they require a lot more preparation for the gel to adhere.
  2. Assign a tip to each of your natural nails, matching the widths. Get a set of ten or more tips from a drugstore or order them online. Assign one tip from the kit to each of your natural nails. To do this, find a tip that fits perfectly with the width of your natural nail. The edges of the tip should be perfectly aligned with the sides of your natural nail.
    • If you choose a set with more than ten tips, you have more sizes to choose from. This is especially useful if you are not sure what widths you need.
  3. Glue the tips to the ends of your natural nails. Brush a small amount of nail glue into the well at the bottom of the first nail tip. Press the entire well down onto the tip of your natural nail, keeping the sides of your nail and the tip perfectly together. Hold the tip in place for between five and ten seconds until the adhesion is good. Then proceed to apply the remaining nine nail tips to the corresponding natural nails.
    • Make sure that the entire part of the well overlaps with your natural nail to apply the nail the most firmly.
    • Make a rocking motion while pressing the tip to squeeze out any air bubbles from the glue.
  4. Let the primer gel cure under a UV or LED nail lamp. Place your nails with primer under the drying lamp. Turn on the lamp and let it run for one drying cycle. The duration of curing depends on the type of gel and nail dryer lamp you are using. Follow the curing times recommended by the gel and lamp manufacturers to get the best results.
    • An LED lamp cures the gel faster than a UV lamp.
    • For reference, you may have to wait about two minutes for the primer to cure under a UV lamp.
    • Under a LED lamp, the curing time can be closer to 30 seconds.
  5. Let the first layer of gel harden under the lamp. When you have applied the first coat of gel on all nails, place the nails under the UV or LED nail drying lamp. Allow the lamp to cure for the necessary cure time, according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
    • With an LED lamp you let the gel cure for at least 30 seconds. You have to wait at least three minutes with a UV lamp.
    • To prevent the gel from running, finish the first coat on one hand and cure it under the lamp before switching to the other hand.
  6. Apply a finishing gel top coat and let it cure. Use a paintbrush to sweep a thin layer of finishing gel from your cuticle to the free edge, starting in the middle and then moving to either side of your nail. After applying the topcoat to each nail, let your nails cure under a UV or LED drying lamp for the time recommended by the manufacturer.
    • After curing the gel topcoat, feel free to apply a coat of standard nail polish or nail art, if you wish.

  • Don't forget to apply cuticle oil when you're done so that the skin around your nails looks hydrated and healthy.
