GTA 4 on a PC offers players the possibility to install modifications (modifications or mods) and thus expand or improve the game. Car mods are great for changing the look of some cars in the game, making driving around town a whole new experience.

Part 1 of 3: The Mod Installer

1. Download the "GTA IV Vehicle Mod Installer". You can download this from gta4-mods.com. There are several programs that allow you to install mods, but this program is the easiest way for cars, but this program is the simplest way for cars.
2. Extract the installation file. In most cases, you can simply double-click the downloaded ZIP file and copy the contents to your desktop.
3. Start the installation file. In the folder you extracted you will find a setup program. Rotate it to install the mod. Most players can just use the default settings.
4. Open the program. Your computer may notify you that the file is unknown, but it is safe to proceed.
5. Make sure the GTA 4 directory is recognized. In the field at the top of the window you should see a path to the directory of GTA 4. If the folder is not recognized, click on Browse and set the folder yourself.

Part 2 of 3: Installing a new car

1. Back up your Save file. Before installing a new vehicle, it is always a good idea to back up your Savegame. While you usually won't run into any problems, sometimes Save's can get corrupted. Make a copy of this file and keep it safe.
   • You can find your Savegames in the game directory.
2. Download an archive file with the desired vehicle. You can download vehicles from various locations, but you have the best chance that a mod will be compatible using the mod installer if you download vehicles from gta4-mods.com.
3. Open the mod installer if you haven't already.
   • Make sure GTA 4 is not running. If GTA 4 is running, installing the mod will probably not work properly.
4. Select the option "Vehicle install from archive". This allows you to install the car mod directly from the downloaded archive file.
5. Select the file of the new vehicle. Click the Browse button somewhere at the bottom of the screen, and go to the archive you just downloaded.
6. Start installing the mod. Click Next after selecting the vehicle file.
7. Watch the changes. The installation file will show the changes made to the GTA 4 files. As long as there are green check marks behind each listing, the new mod will work fine. Click Next to continue.
8. Select the file you want to replace. GTA 4 only supports a select group of vehicles. Select the vehicle in the game that you want to replace.
   • Make sure you don't select a boat to replace or your car will end up in the water.
9. Search for the new vehicle. Your newly installed car will appear where the old vehicle was. This means that you usually just have to wait until you see one in a parking lot or in traffic. You can always use cheats to make a new vehicle appear, using the name of the old vehicle.

Part 3 of 3: Restoring the original cars

1. Open the car mod installer. The GTA IV Vehicle Mod Installer offers the possibility to restore the original cars.
   • Make sure GTA 4 is not running.
2. Select the option "Original vehicle restore". This will uninstall the car mod.
3. Click on .Next and view the changes to restore the original cars.
