This wikiHow teaches you how to add a black fade-in and fade-out effect to the beginning and end of an iMovie clip. You can do this on the mobile version as well as the desktop version of iMovie.

To step

Method 1 of 2: On your mobile

1. Open iMovie. Tap the purple icon with a white star and a video camera on it.
2. Select a project. Tap the tab Projects at the top of the screen, then tap a project you want to open.
3. Select a transition icon. Tap one of the icons | ►◄ | between two clips. A pop-up menu will appear.
4. Tap on Fade. Doing this will place a fade out transition on the end of the left clip and a fade in transition on the right clip.
   • Repeat this step for any other transition icons you want to change.
5. Tap Settings Tap the switch "Fade in from black" Tap the "Fade out to black" switch Tap on ready. It's in the top right corner of the screen. This will save your settings and apply the black fade-in and / or fade-out effects.

Method 2 of 2: On your desktop

1. Open your Mac's iMovie. Click the purple star and movie camera icon in your Mac's Dock or open Spotlight Select a project. Click on the tab Projects at the top of the window, then click on a project you want to add the fade in / out effect to.
   • If you don't have any existing projects, click Create new in the top left corner and add the video clip (s) you need before proceeding.
2. Move a clip to the editing area. Click and drag and drop the part of your project that you want to add fade in / out to the bottom half of the iMovie window. You should see a preview of the clip appear on the right side of the iMovie window.
   • If you want to add multiple clips at once, hold down first ⌘ Command and click each clip you want to move to select them. You can then click and drag a selected clip to drag them all into the editing area.
3. click on Settings. You can find this on the right side of the window, just below the preview of your clip. A drop-down menu will appear.
4. Check the box "Fade in from black". You will see this box in the drop-down menu. Checking this will add a black fade-in effect at the beginning of your clip.
5. Check the box "Fade out to black". It's under the box "Fade in from black". Checking this will add a black fade out effect at the end of your clip.
6. Add the fade in or out to other clips in your project. Depending on how many clips you have in your project, you may need to add fade in and / or fade out to different sections.

Tips

• Fade in and fade out are both useful for drawing the viewer to the next scene or image.
