Eating in Minecraft is essential to collect hunger points in your hunger bar. Your health level is affected by whether or not you have eaten enough.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Finding food

  1. Find or choose a certain type of food. There are different types of food available in Minecraft, from apples to steak.
    • A lot of food (and ingredients) can be stored in your inventory. The only foods you can't store are mushroom stew and milk.

Method 2 of 4: Making food

In some cases, you will have to prepare food to make it edible.

  1. Prepare the following foods:
    • Mushrooms become mushroom stew: Use a bowl. Brown mushrooms can be made into a mushroom stew by breaking huge brown mushrooms (found in swamps, dark or shady areas, and mushroom areas). Use the same method for large red mushrooms, using scissors.
    • Cocoa beans: Make cookies from cocoa beans. Break cocoa plants and craft with a dungeon chest;
    • Chicken eggs: Use chicken eggs (laid by chickens) to make a cake. You use the same method for making pumpkin pie (harvest full-grown pumpkins grown from seed, or find pumpkins that want to be grown in it);
    • Sugar: Must be turned into a cake and cannot be eaten by itself. Make it a cake (or a pumpkin pie);
    • Wheat: Make it into bread, cake or biscuits. Harvest when it is ripened;
    • Gold: Can you make a golden apple or a golden carrot (the latter cannot be eaten, but only used for brewing potions). You need 1 gold nugget left by a zombie pig. Alternatively, you can make 9 gold nuggets to get a gold apple. In addition, using gold blocks instead of gold nuggets will give you an enchanted golden apple, also known as a "Notch Apple".

Method 3 of 4: Eat food

  1. Make sure the hunger bar is not completely full. If so, the only things you can eat are golden apples.
  2. Put the food in your hand. That is necessary before you can eat it. You do this as follows:
    • Press and hold the right "Use Item" button.
    • Right click while the food is in your hand. Your character will then start to eat it.
  3. Note that different foods have different "nutritional values", or higher and lower possibilities to "satiate" your character through the hunger bar. It's best to use more nutritious foods (higher nutritional value) when the hunger bar is fuller so you don't waste satiety points.
  4. If you notice that the hunger bar starts to wave, this means that you will lose a hunger point, which means that you can eat something again.

Method 4 of 4: Prevent food poisoning

  1. Be warned! Some foods that look edible may cause food poisoning. For instance:
    • Poisonous potatoes
    • Raw chicken (30% risk of poisoning)
    • Rotten meat (75% chance of poisoning)
    • Spider eye (100% chance of poisoning).
    • Pufferfish (100% risk of poisoning).

Tips

  • If you have cake to eat, you will need to place it on a surface before you can eat it.
  • Milk (obtained by milking a cow) will reverse status effects on the player. You use milk to make cake.
  • You can eat while sleeping or climbing.
  • Any kind of food you eat will cure some of your hunger bar.
  • An animation of the food appears in the first person view only.
  • Only in Creative mode can you consume milk or drinks.
  • If you are far enough in the game, make an automatic melon / pumpkin farm so that you never run out of food. You can find tutorials on YouTube.

Warnings

  • Rotten meat, spider eyes, raw chicken, and poisonous potatoes will cause you to be partially poisoned if you eat them. Try to avoid these!
  • However, wolves can be encouraged to produce offspring by feeding them rotten meat, so that's a positive point!
