If you accidentally flushed a toilet roll down the toilet, it is almost always the case that the cardboard clogs your toilet. It is not easy to get the roll out of the drain, but it is possible.

To step

  1. Determine if this is really the cause. Sometimes it is not the toilet roll that clogs the toilet. However, if your toilet is clogged, it is most likely due to the toilet roll.
    • See if the water disappears when you flush the toilet. Due to the properties of the roller, not much water can flush down the drain. What should happen is that the water gets very high in the toilet bowl and then slowly drains. If the water doesn't drain at all, you have a bigger problem.
  2. Try to remove the roll with a plopper or toilet brush. Sometimes the roll is just in the front of the toilet bowl and the problem isn't as bad as you thought.
  3. Put a dishwasher tablet in the toilet and let it soak for half an hour. This will help soak and soften the roll in the water.
    • Then take the tablet out of the toilet. This step helps because more water can pass through the drain. Put on gloves to avoid getting an infection.
  4. Flush the toilet three or four times. Sometimes the toilet roll comes loose just by flushing the toilet because it has become soft and now slides down the drain.
  5. Use the plopper five to ten times and then flush the toilet. Slowly push the plopper handle down and then pull it up. You should be pushing water into the toilet. Once you flush the toilet, it is sometimes better to remove the roll by letting the toilet bowl largely fill up and then flushing the toilet again to allow more water to enter the bowl. Be careful with this, because the toilet bowl can overflow.
    • Eventually your toilet should be unclogged again. If it doesn't work, go to Step 9.
  6. Use a sewer spring or a wire clothes hanger to try to free the roll. Simply push the sewer spring or a straightened clothes hanger down the drain to push the roll loose. Flush the toilet if you feel anything slipping.
  7. Try a combination of dish soap, flush, chemical drain cleaner, and a second flush. This makes it easier for the roller to slide down the drain and the chemical drain cleaner should loosen the roller and flush it away.
  8. Keep repeating these steps. The more time you spend on it, the softer the roll will become. The more you flush, the faster the roll will come off.
  9. Grab a bucket of warm water, add some dish soap and carefully pour the mixture into the toilet bowl. Do not use boiling hot water, as this can crack the porcelain. It works better if there is as little water in the toilet bowl as possible, because then you can pour more hot water into it. You flush the toilet while pouring. This should help loosen and flush the toilet roll.
  10. If nothing works, call an unclogging company. Sometimes this is unfortunately necessary.

Tips

  • Sometimes it helps to soak the toilet roll overnight and let it come off.

Warnings

  • Be careful with chemical drain cleaners.
