Fold a sheet of paper in half? Piece of cake. Fold it in quarters? Hardly a problem. Divide a sheet of paper into three perfectly? This can be quite a challenge as anyone who has ever folded an important piece of correspondence can tell you that it takes a surprising amount of finesse for this task. Whether you're sending a letter to a loved one, doing a math project, or simply dividing your scrap paper into three equal pieces, a perfectly folded sheet of paper is a testament to professionalism and attention to detail.

To step

Method 1 of 5: Using the "intuitive" method

  1. Start with the paper flat on your work surface. Believe it or not, there are many ways to fold a paper in thirds, but some will give a more accurate result than others. Try this method if the not need to be exact - it's fast and works well, but the result will rarely be perfect.
    • The advantage is that you don't need any tools for this method.
    • Note that standard 27.9cm letterhead paper does not need to be folded perfectly in thirds to fit in an envelope, making this a good choice for correspondence.
  2. Make a fold at this point, then fold over the remaining flap of paper. Fold through your marker, perpendicular to both edges of the paper. This is one of the two folds. The second is easy - just fold the other edge of the paper inward so that it fits snugly on the inside of the first fold (just like in the sections above).

Tips

  • Try to fold fairly quickly to make this easier. It usually doesn't have to be perfect. If you focus too hard on getting perfect folds, you're more likely to screw up. Just relax and get started.
  • In the intuitive method, try to shape the loose cylinder to minimize the amount of imperfections - if it's a little wrong, you can make the fold a little bit smaller or larger so you can still work fairly accurately.
  • If you have trouble folding the page evenly, keep the corners that are folded on top of the rest of the sheet and simulate the fold without making it (before making the fold sharp). Make sure both corners are flush with the edge of the paper.
  • Try not to fold your paper too much or it will be more difficult to get it perfect.

Warnings

  • Ink costs a fortune! If you're making the folds for an important letter, practice on a blank sheet before trying to fold the finished product.
