It can be frustrating when you are locked out. Sometimes it can take hours for the locksmith to arrive and you may not have the time to wait there. Knowing how to crack a lock will help you out and can be useful in an emergency.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Using two hair clips

  1. Remove the plastic from the ends. You can usually get this off with your teeth. You can also pull it off with pliers or cut them off with a butter knife.
  2. Bend one end about 45 degrees. You can do this by inserting the end into the lock and bending the pin to one side. This will give you a small bend at the end about an inch long. Don't bend it too much. This is not a 90 degree angle like the previous one.
  3. Bend the other end so that you have a handle. At this point, your pin should have an "L" shape with the flat end slightly bent. Take the other end and fold it half over itself to form a small "V" shape (about a 20 degree angle) that serves as a handle.
  4. Get a second hairpin. You should have another hairpin that you put in the lock so that you can turn it.
  5. Bend the end of the second hairpin about 70 degrees. Do not unfold this hairpin like you did the previous one. Instead, use pliers to bend the dense part of the hairpin about 70 degrees. You can also use the same method from the first hairpin. Insert the end into the lock, then pull it down until the hairpin is bent.
  6. Make sure you have a lock with a spring bolt. A lock with a spring latch is a lock with a spring and a bevel. It is one of the most commonly used types of locks. The debit card method does not work on other types of locks. Spring bolt locks are usually found on doorknobs. If your door has a deadbolt, this method will not work.
  7. Choose a bank card that you can spare. This method will bend your card and may break it. Instead of using your debit card, you might want to use an expired gift card, a grocery store card, or a credit card that you don't use often and is easy to replace.
  8. Insert the card between the door and the door frame. Insert the card exactly where the latch of the latch is, next to the doorknob itself. The card must be bent to insert it.
  9. Move the card up and down while pushing it firmly forward. You have to try to take the latch that keeps the door closed with the card. This handle has a smooth side that is bent at an angle. Your goal is to slide the card up the smooth edge, pushing the latch in.
  10. Bend the card out of the direction of the door. This puts pressure on the latch itself and pushes it away from the doorway and back into the door.
  11. Turn the doorknob while moving the map. Start turning the doorknob to open the door while pushing the card in. The door should open when the card slides past the latch, freeing the knob to be turned.

Method 3 of 3: Opening a lock with a push button

  1. Gather your tools. Locks with a push button are usually found on interior doors. Usually these are doors in the bedroom or the bathroom indoors. They have a button inside the doorknob that the resident can push to activate the lock. Push-button locks can be opened from the outside with a number of different items. Anything long and straight that will fit into the hole in the center of the doorknob should work. Consider using a hairpin, paper clip, or iron wire coat hanger.
  2. Find the hole. Most push button locks have a small hole in the center of the door knob. If you can't see it, check the doorknob rod or the area where the doorknob connects to the door. You should see a small hole.
  3. Insert the paper clip into the hole and push. Push the pin into the hole until you feel it grab. Apply pressure and push the pin forward. You should hear a click and the lock will open.
