This article will teach you how to build a working elevator in Minecraft. While it is possible to build an elevator with advanced materials from Survival mode, you usually create an elevator in Creative mode. The lift template as used in this article works on any version of Minecraft for the desktop, Pocket Edition and console (including the Nintendo Switch).

To step

Part 1 of 3: Making the base of the elevator

1. Dig the foundation. Make a hole four blocks wide, three blocks high and four blocks deep. Make sure to do this under the area from which you want the lift to start.
   • For example, if you have made a basement foundation, you will need to make the hole in the basement floor.
2. Turn to a three-block wide section of the foundation. It doesn't matter which side of the foundation you look up to.
3. Replace the middle block in the second row of the floor with obsidian. This means that the first row of the floor from the three-block wide wall does not contain obsidian, but the next row contains a block of obsidian instead of soil (or stone, or whatever material the floor has).
4. Look in a different direction. Stand behind the block of obsidian and face the four-block side, making sure that the shorter side of the foundation is on your right, and the longer side is on your left.
   • This is very important, so make sure you are facing the right way before continuing.
5. Remove the block between the obsidian block and the wall. This will create a block deep hole in the foundation floor.
6. Remove one more block along the entire perimeter of the foundation. Your foundation should now be five blocks wide, four long, and four deep.
7. Move in a different direction again. You should now be looking at the obsidian with the short part of the foundation on your left and the longer part on your right.
8. Add observers to it. Place an upward observer on top of the obsidian, and add an upward observer, two blocks up and one to the left.
9. Remove the block hitting the obsidian in the lower left corner. You should now have a trench two blocks wide and one block deep between you and the block of obsidian.
10. Add slime blocks to it. The slime blocks will be on top of (but not in) the trench.
11. Add your sticky piston to it. Place an upward-facing sticky piston on the far right slime block and a downward-facing sticky piston on the far left slime block.
    • You may need to dig a temporary hole to get the correct angle for placing a downward-facing sticky piston.
12. Place a slime block on top of the sticky pistons. With this you have made the basis for the floor of the lift.
13. Fix the elevator door. Place a block of your choice (preferably stone) on top of each of the slime blocks. With this you have made the device that is the moving part of the elevator.

Part 2 of 3: Making the switch on the elevator

1. Place an ordinary piston (pusher). Face the three-block wall so that the bottom observer is on your right, then place the plunger on the floor block directly in front of you. The piston should face you and touch the edge of the observer, leaving the space directly in front of the observer empty.
2. Place a block of stone behind the piston. This block comes directly behind the piston, leaving a block of space between the block and the back wall.
3. Make a "staircase" with blocks. Place a block of stone one up and one to the right behind the piston, and another block one up and one to the right from that point. You will need a collection of three stone blocks behind the piston, in the shape of a staircase.
4. Place a block of stone directly above the stairs at ground level. This means that you place a block on top of the top stair block and another stone block on top of it, then remove the first block you placed.
5. Add redstone dust to the stairs. Select redstone dust from your inventory, then select each of the three descending stone blocks.
   • Leave the floating stone block you placed in the last step empty.
6. Add an "Up" button to the floating stone block. This button should be on the side of the block facing the floor of your elevator.
   • Don't press yet on the button - if you do this the elevator as it is now will take off and take off, never to return.

Part 3 of 3: Making the top of the elevator

1. Create a temporary column on top of the observer. Place a column one block wide on top of the top observer.
   • The temporary column should be as many blocks high as you want the elevator side to rise.
2. Place a block of obsidian on top of the temporary column. This is the block that will stop the elevator from ascending.
3. Delete the temporary column. Remove all blocks from the temporary column, but make sure to keep the obsidian block in place.
4. Activate your elevator. Select the button next to the floor of the lift to do this. The elevator will go up until it hits the block of obsidian.
5. Install another plunger. You do this by looking at the obsidian block closest to you, placing a temporary column on the right side of the observer below the obsidian, then a piston on the temporary column on your left.
   • With the front of the observer facing you, the plunger should be facing left.
6. Delete the temporary column. You should now have a floating, left-facing piston.
7. Place a row of three stone blocks behind the piston. Place the first block directly behind the piston, the second block to the right of the first block, and place the third block to the right of the second block.
8. Place a floating stone block above the third stone block. Place a block on top of the stone block on the far right of the row, place a stone on top and remove the first block you placed in this step.
   • If you now look towards the back of the piston, you should see a row of stone blocks three blocks wide, with a floating stone block above the block on the far right of the row.
9. Place redstone on the column of three blocks. You are left with a line of redstone dust three blocks long.
10. Add the "Down" button to the elevator. This button will be next to the floating block of stone facing the floor of the elevator. You now have a fully functional elevator that can go up and down with the push of a button.
    • You can decorate the elevator with walls, doors, etc.

Tips

• It is much easier to build a house around an elevator than an elevator in a house.
• You might consider creating a second elevator and a platform that connect the two so that there is always one elevator to go up and one to go down.

Warnings

• If you're building an elevator in Survival mode, make sure you have a second flight of stairs in case your elevator breaks or you fall off.
