The liver performs many tasks that help you maintain a healthy body. The liver processes everything you eat, drink and absorb through your skin, and as a result it is regularly exposed to many harmful substances. Some of the signs of liver damage include allergies, malnutrition, high cholesterol and triglycerides, and even gallstones. A liver cleansing can help relieve many of these problems. Liver detox products are available in health and drug stores, but you can also make your own at home with just a few ingredients. Here are a few ways to cleanse a liver.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Grapefruit and Epsom Salt

  1. Understand the benefits of this cleaning. This 24-hour detox is designed to remove toxins from the liver and flush gallstones from the gallbladder.
    • It has helped relieve people and heal problems such as chronic acne, yeast infection and symptoms associated with intestinal dysbiosis.
    • To perform this cleanse, all you need is Epsom salt, extra virgin olive oil and a large grapefruit.
  2. Prepare your body for the cleansing. In the days leading up to the detox, you should eat a lot of apples and drink as much apple juice as possible - this will prepare the liver for the detox.
    • On the last day before starting the detox, try to drink 240 ml of apple juice every 2 - 3 hours.
    • On the morning of the detox, eat a light, fat-free breakfast. A healthy smoothie or some whole grain muesli with fruit are two good choices.
  3. Prepare the salt mix and drink it. At 2 p.m. on the day of the detox, mix 4 tablespoons of Epsom salt with 700 ml of water.
    • Pour the salt mixture into a large pot or pitcher and refrigerate. Do not eat any food after 2 pm.
    • At 6 pm you drink 175 ml of the salt mixture. If you find the taste difficult to swallow, you can mix in a little bit of powdered vitamin C. Drink another 175 ml of the salt mixture at 8 pm.
  4. Prepare and drink the grapefruit mixture. At 9:45 pm, squeeze a large grapefruit (you should eventually have 125 to 175 ml of juice) and pour it into a jar.
    • Add 125ml virgin olive oil, close the lid and shake the jar vigorously to mix.
    • Drink this mixture of grapefruit and oil (through a straw if needed) and then go straight to bed - this is important for the cleansing to work properly.
    • Lie on your right side with your right knee pulled up to your chest. Try to sleep.
  5. Complete the cleaning. The next morning you drink another 175 ml of the salt mixture as soon as you wake up, and you drink the last portion two hours later.
    • After another 2 hours, you can go back to drinking juice, and then back to solid foods for 2 more hours - just make sure what you eat is light and healthy.
    • You can have one or more bowel movements the morning after the liver cleanse. You can find round, green stones in your stool - these are gallstones. Having gallstones in your stool is very normal and means that the cleansing has worked well.

Method 2 of 4: Cranberry juice

  1. Understand the benefits of this cleaning. This detoxifying agent is used to cleanse the liver and colon, removing toxic waste to rule out bloating, increase energy levels and support weight loss.
    • To perform this cleanse you will need unsweetened cranberry juice, cinnamon, ginger root, nutmeg, 2-3 oranges, 2-3 lemons and several packs of stevia (a natural sweetener).
  2. Prepare your body for the cleansing. Before performing this cleanse, it is essential that you prepare your liver by following a healthy diet in the 7 days prior to the cleanse. This will help keep you from feeling tired and limp on the day of the cleanse.
    • Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables (lettuce, cabbage, kale), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts), citrus fruits, foods rich in sulfur (eggs, garlic, and onions), and liver-healing foods (asparagus, beets, and celery).
    • Also make sure you drink plenty of water (2 liters per day) and avoid dishes that contain a lot of fats, are processed, contain refined carbohydrates or gluten products. You should also rule out alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and unnecessary medications.
  3. Prepare the cleansing cranberry drink. On the morning of the cleansing, prepare the cranberry drink. First, dilute the unsweetened cranberry juice to a quarter of its original strength with filtered water, so that you have 2 liters of liquid. Pour this cranberry water into a saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat.
    • Add a teaspoon each of coarsely ground cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg to a tea ball and hang in the boiling cranberry water. Let the cranberry water boil gently for 15 to 20 minutes, then remove it from the heat and let it cool.
    • When it is cool, squeeze the oranges and lemons and add the juice to the cranberry water. Taste the moisture and add a few sachets of stevia for sweetness if desired.
  4. Drink the cranberry mixture throughout the day. On the day of your cleansing, drink the cranberry water, one 240 ml glass at a time.
    • Alternate between drinking the cranberry water and plain filtered water throughout the day, until you have finished at least 2 liters of each. Be warned - you will have to urinate a lot!
    • You should also take an enteric supplement (such as two teaspoons of psyllium husk powder or two tablespoons of ground flaxseed) twice during the day. Once in the morning and once in the evening.
  5. Allow your body to recover from the cleanse. For the three days following the cleanse, you should follow the same dietary guidelines as were required in the week before the cleanse. Otherwise the results will be less good.
    • You should also try to include some healthy bacteria in your diet, from organic raw sauerkraut or plain yogurt, which contain live active cultures.

Method 3 of 4: Apple cider vinegar

  1. Understand the benefits of this cleaning. Apple cider vinegar has long been used as a home remedy for liver cleansing and blood purification.
    • However, it also has a range of other benefits, such as aiding digestion, supporting weight loss and fighting acne.
    • Keep in mind that apple cider vinegar will only work as a liver detoxifier when combined with a healthy diet.
  2. Buy organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Make sure to buy organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar as it has a higher nutritional value.
    • Before pouring, shake the bottle to distribute the thicker, misty-looking layer at the bottom - this is considered "the mother" and is the most nutritious part of the vinegar.
  3. Take the apple cider vinegar daily. Apple cider vinegar can be used for extended periods of time to detoxify your liver and you don't need to fast for it.
    • All you need to do is add 2 to 3 teaspoons of the vinegar to a 1 cup glass of water and drink it before each meal.
    • Alternatively, you can add 1 or 2 tablespoons of the apple cider vinegar to a tall glass of water and drink it first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.
  4. Use apple cider vinegar in other ways. Alternative ways to add more apple cider vinegar to your diet include:
    • Make a tea by adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to hot water and adding honey to sweeten it.
    • Make a salad dressing by mixing apple cider vinegar with flaxseed oil and honey.

Method 4 of 4: Deliver cleansing nutrition

  1. Eat garlic. Garlic is a great addition to your diet when trying to cleanse your liver, as it activates enzymes in the liver that help flush out toxins. It also contains two natural components, allecine and selenium, which support healthy liver function.
  2. Eat leafy green vegetables. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, arugula, dandelion leaf and chicory contain a multitude of liver cleansing benefits - they remove heavy metals, pesticides and herbicides (which wreak havoc in the liver) and increase the production and fluidity of healthy bile.
  3. Eat grapefruit. Grapefruit contains a special protein called glutathione that attaches itself to toxins before removing them from the body. Enjoying a whole grapefruit or a freshly squeezed glass of grapefruit juice for breakfast aids the liver cleansing process while boosting your body's vitamin C, pectin and antioxidants.
  4. Eat avocado. Avocados are also high in glutathione, a compound that protects the liver from toxins and ensures good liver function. One study has shown that eating 1 to 3 avocados per week for at least 30 days can help reverse liver damage.
  5. Eat walnuts. Walnuts contain glutathione, an amino acid called I-arginine, and omega-3 fatty acids. All of these help to detoxify the liver and lower ammonia levels - high levels of these are responsible for many diseases. Try chewing a handful of walnuts as a snack, or sprinkling them on a salad.
  6. Eat turmeric. Turmeric is something like a liver cleansing superfood - it protects the liver from toxins and helps repair damaged liver cells. It also enhances bile production and supports the healthy functioning of the gallbladder, another purifying organ. Try adding turmeric to lentil curry and stewed vegetable dishes to take advantage of its detoxifying benefits.
  7. Know what to avoid. There are certain foods and ingredients that work against the liver by overloading it with toxins and hindering its function. Such foods are, for example, processed fatty foods such as preserved meats (sausages, corned beef), frozen foods, margarine and hardened oils, and any foods containing artificial colors and flavors.
  8. Take supplements. There are many natural supplements that can help detoxify the liver and support a healthy liver. Some of the most popular include malic acid, burdock, dandelion root, and milk thistle. These can be found at the pharmacy and health store and can be taken according to the instructions on the package.
  9. Drink detoxifying tea. Certain herbal teas are said to flush out toxins and fat stores from the liver, while also increasing hydration levels. The best tea blends for liver cleansing contain ingredients such as dandelion root, ginger, cloves, burdock root, chamomile, cinnamon, and horsetail. Try to drink at least two cups of herbal tea a day and sweeten it with honey if necessary.

Tips

  • Cold pressed flaxseed, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Ornithine capsules and milk thistle can be found in most health or supplement stores.
  • It is recommended that you do a colon cleanse and kidney cleanse before doing a liver cleanse. This cleanse will release a large amount of toxins into your bloodstream, so your kidneys should be in top condition to filter out and drive the toxins out. Your intestines will also act to clear these toxins.
  • Always avoid fatty foods and acetaminophen.
  • Milk thistle can be added to any of these liver cleansing recipes, whether in capsule or liquid form. You can add two 120 mg capsules to the cleanse or five drops of liquid. Milk thistle helps to repair cells damaged by toxic substances.
